- jThe Great Opportunity

Thousands of young men and women will leave our high schools and colleges within a few weeks to take their places-in the vocations of life., They are bringing to their new tasks the enthusiasm of the youth and the determination

to make for themselves big names and lots of

money.

. Their optimism is not unfounded, for never in the history of the world have there been so many opportunities for personal progresses today. Financiers and leaders of , industry and commerce agree on that point. Many of the old leaders, who have made fortunes in the last quarter of a century, bewail the passing years that have robbed them of the energy and strength to enter the arena today. Most of them say they wish they were young again to test their ability and stamina in the changed conditions arising since the World war.

America - needs the vitality and splendid courage' of her young men and women. The victorious as well as conquered nations of Europe are in the same position. They need the stimulating influence of youth to grapple with the changed problems of material and spiritual conditions. But the young men and women, starting on life's journey with trie best wishes of friends and relatives, must not be disappointed if honors and wealth do not come within a year or two. Soft snaps and easy jobs are seldom found, and if you are unfortunate enough to find one, quit it overnight and tackle a hard proposition. Success never attended a snap. It always is the reward for meritorious service and self-sacrificing effort. The young graduates of our educational institutions will grow strong and accomplish great things if they are ambitious and are urged forward by the honest incentive to make their lives worth while and of service to the community. A selfish spirit has within itself the germs of decay. It never develops into a well rounded and beautifully proportioned life.

It is not what we take out of life, but what we put in it, that counts. The graduates who keep that maxim in mind will not go far wrong in steering toward a safe port. Not all of them will amass fortunes and annex titles, but if they have lived a life of service, followed the true and beaten paths, they need not be ashamed of their records or disappointed over their careers.

I Today's Talk By George Matthew Adams

, j FASCINATION The element of fascination enters to a very large degree into the making up of one's every-day happiness. We fascinate those -whose sympathy touches our own, whose ideals, impulses and noble tendencies scent companionship, on meeting wtth us". So may we in turn, fascinate our better selves and make them lift us to greater levels of character and accomplishment. Nature fascinates itself and then we bow to its beauty and are ourselves fascinated in an endless number of ways, thru sunsets, the exquisite colorings of an earth of flowers, and by every agency of lovelinefW, whether it be the matchless song of a bird or the formation of stone or mountain elope. There is always a tone, an Indescribable manner of spirit, a grouping of all noble tendencies, to fascination. When we are fascinated we lose pur powers of description and are able only to lie down with our feelings mute messengers of our appreciation. If you are true and generous, if you are sincere, if you are not afraid, you will fascinate and in turn be fascinated. For fascination Is a sort of indwelling spirit quite universal in its bearing. You can't get away from it when once you have touched its zone. Every tint of beauty in existence fascinates the soul of the one whose desire is the love of beauty. All color, all greatness, aU humanity, then becomes kin!

rah, how can you stand it To sneak around at night and thug and steal? When you thug and hold up fellers, break into and rob cellars, Don't you painful qualms of conscience ever feel?" Replied the hardened villain, "Aw, nothing short of killin Disturbs the least or causes me to fear. Before I was a robber I was workin' at the job or The avocation of a soulless profiteer." Memories of Old Days In This Paper Ten Years Ago Today

Good Evening By Roy K. Moulton

When we began conducting this column, several years ago, we had the erroneous idea that we could please everybody, and we conducted it with that end In view. Now we are not trying to please anybody and are doing fairly well. Bainbrldge Colby will be the president's "favorite son" for the presidency. What has become of the presi

dent's favorite son-in-law? Perhap3 you will say this is more McAdoo About Nothing. One thing we hope to see,- after which we will think we have seen everything worth while. We hope to see a battle between a rent gouger and a food hog. "A profiteer can't take it with him when he goes." says a philosopher. But it is rather dull work for the rest of us to sit around and wsrtt for that. In spite of the theory of the scientist, we do not believe a hard working man lives longer than an idler. It only seems longer. The first man to carry an umbrella

The legion has opened a campaign for the readoption of approximately H.000 of the more than 3,700 fatherless French children whom the American Expeditionary Force adopted during the war. A total of $75 is necessary for the support of one orphan for a year.

Glen Miller park was ready for the visitors, with new benches, swings, and added attractions among the animals. It was announced that band concerts for Sunday afternoons would soon be started. Many requests were being received from out-of-town clubs and other organizations for permission to picnic in the park. It was announced that the American Order of Owls would hold its convention in this city on May 25 and 26. JOKE IS ON BANK ROBBERS; DOOR WAS 8TANDING OPEN NEW RICHMOND, Ind., May 22. Yeggmen who attempted to rob , the Corn Exchange bank here Thursday night, went to a lot of extra trouble to cut a hole through the rear brick wall of the bank vault, while the vault door stood open. Robbers, six weeks ago, cut a hole in the steel vault door and rifled the safety deposit boxes, obtaining about $2,000 in Liberty bonds. Since that time the vault door had not been repaired Hind, as a joke, bank employes bad tacked a sign over the door reading, "This door is not locked."

"Well, Tommy, did you learn anything at school today?" asked the proud father. "Yes, dad," replied the youngster with pugilistic ambitions'. "Fine! What was it? History, geography, grammar ?" "No, dad. I learned that Sam Snoggs, the butcher's son, packs an awful punch in his right." The young wife was greeted' by the obsequious grocer with a request to know what he could have the pleasure of serving her with, and she proceeded to place her first order as follows; "Please send me up five pounds of paralyzed sugar for frosting." "Yes'm. Anything else?" "Yes; send me three cans of condemned milk." "Yes'm. What else?" "I want some salt if you have any that is fresh. You must be sure that it is nice and fresh."
