CITY TO FIGHT GAS COMPANY'S PETITION FOR RISE IN RATES The city will "fight to a finish" the petition presented by the gas company calling for a revaluation of property with a subsequent rise in rates. By a unanimous vote the council Monday night authorized the city attorney and the board of public works' to prepare an ordinance calling for the employment of an expert engineer to appraise the gas plant, and ordered them to prepare all possible data with which the city may contest the proposed increase. The mation to fight the rise was made by Councilman Waidele after the petition had been read by City Attorney Byram Robbins. Robbins said that the gas company "seemed to have an insatiable appetite. They are never satisfied, he said. The attorney declared that the gas company had made a net earning of 12 per cent the year that the present administration came Into office, nine per cent and a fraction the next year, and eight per cent and a fraction the next year. Only Entitled to 7 Per Cent. "They are entitled only to a seven per cent return on their investment" said Robbins. "The city did. not contest the gas company's earnings because of the unusual conditions that prevailed but the time has come to call a halt." Members of the council passed Councilman Waidel's motion without protracted discussion, although the sentiment of the city fathers as expressed in the meeting was whole hearted opposition to any Increase in rates. The city may abandon the proposed improvements on Ft. Wayne Avenue, South Fourth street, and on South E street from Sixteenth street to Twenty-Third and may rescind the ordinance providing for the purchase of an emergency fire truck in order to provide funds for the installation of the platoon system In the fire department. The city adopted the proposed plan after City Attorney Robbins reported that the Public Service commission had refused to allow the city to issue bonds to cover current expenses. Unless the platoon system is installed, many of the firemen have signified their Intention of resigning. On Duty 24 Hours. At the present time all firemen are on duty 24 hours a day. The platoon system calls for two 12 hour shifts and would necessitate the employment of 13 more men. The matter of abandoning the improvements and rescinding the ordinance for the purchase of the truck was referred to the city engineer, the board of public works, the ordinance committee, and the city attorney. Fire Chief Miller said that he was heartily in favor of the platoon system and would favor satif fying the men before buying any new equipment. News of the Counties FAIRFIELD, Ind. Rev. Of course, Doc hadn't been wedded at all and was using the subterfuge, of the fake announcement In an endeavor to recoup his falling fortunes. But it resulted in a pretty girl being thrown across his path, and But you will have to Bee "Mary's Ankle" at the Washington Theatre Tuesday. Douglas MacLean, the brilliant new Ince star, has the role of Doc, and Doris May is the girl. The new picture is a Jolly comedy made from May Tully's well known stage play. Lloyd Ingraham directed, and it is a Paramount Artcraft picture. MURRAY Hall bedrooms are generally pictured in fiction as way stations on the ioad to fame. But in real life they're not nearly so romantic, what with crumbling walls and quarters so cramped that you have to lean out of the window to sneeze. At least, that's the way Dorothy Gish finds them in her new picture, "Mary Ellen Comes to Town" which will be shown at the Murray Theatre the first half of the week. Miss Gish has the role of a country girl who comes to New York with high ambitions to go upon the stage. Her ambitions aren't realized, but she gets something better a trial of character, a perilous adventure, and a romance that brings her right back whence she has come. The scenes in which "The Little Disturber" is soda dispenser at a little Southern general merchandise emporium and later when she makes her debit as a cabaret girl are said to be the high spots in a picture that abounds in laughable comedy. terved a year in prison could step Into the shoes ht his minister brother? There Is such a situation as the central theme of "Other Men's Shoe", at the Murrette Theatre Tuesday and Wednesday. Stephen and Jim Browning were twin brothers so alike In face, form rnd voice that their most Intimate friends could not tell them apart. Both were splendid men morally, but Sterhen, the minister, was frail of body and meek of spirit and unable to withstand the buffets of a greedy and grasping world. Jim had heeded the call of Wanderlust for twelve years and had gone to jail for the crime of another. When the strong brother steps into the shoes of the meek brother interesting complications arise, for no one but his sister and brother know of the masquerade. Blackmailers threaten to besmirch his name in the eyes of the townspeople whose attitude of tolerant respect changed to whole-hearted admiration when their minister suddenly displayed a courageous, two-fisted fighting spirit. Clean, wholesome, vigorous, human and dramatic, "Other Men's Shoes" has been called one of the finest proCatarrhal Deafness and Head Noises TELLS SAFE, SIMPLE WAY TO TREAT AND RELIEVE AT HOME If you have catarrh, catarrhal deafness or head noises caused by catarrh, or if phlegm drops in your throat and lias caused catarrh of the stomach or bowels you will be glad to know that these distressing symptoms may be entirely overcome in many instances by the following treatment which you can easily prepare in your own home at little cost.
