FUNDAMENTALS MUST BE RE-EMPHASIZED, EDUCATORS' OPINION

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.. May 7. Readjustment of university and college Instruction so that fundamentals of learning will occupy the same position as applied subjects, in the educational program, was advocated by speakers at the Indiana university centennial conference Thursday. The speakers pointed out that nations who neglected fundamentals tor applied subjects would eventually lose leadership in industry, commerce, agriculture and education. "As 60on as people see in the university not merely an Institution of higher learning but an expression of the higher life of the state they resort to It in Increasing numbers," B. A. Birge, president cf the University of Wisconsin, asserted. Jle added that universities must expect to educate far more students than the future would bring and at a higher cost. James R. Angall, chairman of the National Research Conncil, In his paper, pointed out that the obligation to promote scientific research was simply one phase of the state to promote the welfare of its citizens. He deplored conditions where pure science subjects were neglected and applied sciences predominated.

blossoms yet she wore curi-papers under her boudoir cap and left her hair in the comb. And there was Musa, whose wit was more sparkling than wine and whoso e&igrarus were more piquant than spices yet her tongue knew not wear , Iness, and she would never stop talking! And there was Gracia, who was fairer than the rose of morning and sweeter than a pomegranate yet she opened her vanity cafe at the restaurant table, and powdered her nose in public without shame. And there was Jazza. whose mirth was as a spring tonic and whose gaiety was as sunlight on a meadow yet her pies and puddings were all "burnt offerings." And there was Vampa, whose heart was a sirocco, and whose kisses were as old wine yet her jealousy was more intense than either, and her temper was exceeding Bolshevistic. And there was Vesta, whose broideries were famed in the land and whose cooking was the poetry of viands yet she caused Solomon to wipe his feet, before entering a door and made him to do his smoking in the kitchen. And there was Zerah, whose gentleness and docility were praised by princes yet her conversation was as the rattling of two tin-cans or the buzzing of a phonograph with only one tune. And there was Eehna who gossiped, and Zillrh who opened his letters and kept tabs upon him with a Ouija board and Zirah who borrowed his collars and owned a pair of Pekinese; and Jedda who washed his pipe in soap, and sold his jewels to buy summer furs, and Shrieka who assailed his ears, morning, noon and night with innumerable questions! And lo, if Solomon could not find a Perfect Wife in seven hundred guesses how shall any man hope to find one of these in only ONE guess? Go to!

From all indications it is safe to predict that eyelet embroidery is to be a very popular feature or summer frowns. Already shops are showing dainty frocks of this peek-a-boo fabric Here is a very summery model of rose eyelet flouncing which forms the. skirt to a lace blouse. A rose silk cord forms the girdle.

Epidemic Here Sweeps

Whole Town in Wasting Disease of Spring Fever There is an epidemic spreading over Richmond. If your . typist's fingers linger listlessly over the keys while she gazes out the window, or If she writes letters with a sentence or two added about a place where the violets are blooming, or if she runs to her desk companion with tales about the "sweetest little gingham, just the thing for business, she has it. Isolate her, for it's catching and will spread quickly through the whole office force. The symptom, as evidenced by men is a feverish interest in baseball scores, golf, fishing worm mines, results of horse races and "how will last year's kelly book in a couple of weeks." Lunch hours have been known to extend into lunch days. Children also are susceptible to, the disease. Classes in school show a marked depletion because of ravages of the epidemic. The children present show symptoms which are sure signs. Limp violets, spring beauties, bugs and moist toads are transported into class rooms. The disease is aggravated extremely by open windows, the sound of music or the sight of ' blossoms. Patients are affected differently, but generally symptoms are about the seme and lead to such remarks as: "Wish I didn't have anything to do but loaf and enjoy myself," or - "Wish school was over." The name of the disease is spring fever, and it id estimated 26,704 perrons in Richmond were badly infected within the last two days.

using the crude movie methods of those days, a few "shots" were made of the battle. There were no elaborate studios then in which to screen the rest of the action. The producers sought for several weeks for a suitable locale and finally chose one that was econimlcal to say the least, since it was none other than the back yard of the president of the film company. It was located In what is now the heart of the business section of Philadelphia a site which would probably cost a small fortune today. The rapid strides which the. modern cinema has taken over those crude days are shown clearly in "The Cinema Murder," which features Marion Davies in a picturization- or E. Phillips Oppenheim's novel of mystery and romance by the same name. It Is a Cosmopolitan Production released under the Paramount-Artcraft banner and was directed by George D. Baker. MURRETTE

Nimble as a boy she was strong and growing more beautiful every day. The natives called her a swinging name meaning White Almond Blossoms, but her foster father called her Mary, and as Mary the beachcomber knew her when he arrived with his bottle of gin as his only asset, and as Mary the New England college boy knew her when he arrived. Rational Home Remedy For Wrinkled, Baggy Skin

Bathing the face in a simple lotion made as follows, Is the best thing known to disperse wrinkles, from the finest lines to the deepest crowsfeet: Powdered saxolite, one ounce, dissolved in witch-hazel, one-half pint. Your nearest druggist can supply the constituents. It is a natural and rational treatment, as It tends to remove the cause of those tell-tale signs of advancing age, worry or ill health. Having both astringent and tonic properties, the solution tightens the tooloose skin and tends to solidify the underlying muscular tissue. This smooths out the wrinkles and gives the skin a firmer supporting foundation. Obviously this effect must also reduce hanging cheeks, double chin and baggy neck. The remarkably prompt action of this harmless lotion is another commendable feature. Advertisement.
