MAYOR PROFITEERED ON SUGAR, CHARGE AT LOG ANSPORT, IND. Charges that James I. Barnes, mayor or Logansport, lad., with an alleged n'ttenipt to make excessive profits on a car load ft sugar were made Sunday by Stanley WyckofF, Federal fair price commissioner for Indiana. Mr. Wyckoff says his Investigation shows that a car load of sugar was sold by Syne-Easle & Co., of Chicago to the Rueh-Drompp Company of Ixpansport, Ind., at 19 cents a pound. This car was shipped to the RuchDromp'.) Company and was paid for by J. I. Barnes, mayor of Logansport. The Rueh-Drompp Company is not accustomed, according to Mr. Wyckoff. to handling large amounts of FUgRr. lie a.-scrts that Mayor Barnes used the company as a medium for his own transaction. The price Mayor Barnes is said to ave paid was $13,C13.91 for the car. Mr. Barnes reconsigned the car from Ix)gansport to Indianapolis on April 29, over the Pennsylvania railroad, billed to his own order, and sold it there to the Sales Extension company for $21,000. a profit of about $7,000 on the car. The figures show that he bought the sugar at 19 cents a pound and sold it at 30 cents.

l-OGANSPORT, Ind., May 3. Mayor James I. Barnes declared here today that he had no other connection with the purchase and sale of sugar under investigation by Stanley Wyckoff, fair price commissioner for Indiana, than that of loaning the money to the RuehDrompp Company and accepting as security the bill of lading. The mayor gave the following account of the translation: "A week ago today Kdward Drompp cf the Rueh-Drompp Company came to me and asked me to loan him $13,000. Drompp told me he could not get the money at the bank and that he had an opportunity to get a car of sugar at 19 cents a pound and that the compaov making the sale wanted an immediate draft for the purchase price or it would cancel the order. I told Drompp that ! would let him have the money and handle the transaction just as the banks would do." . The mayor declared his sole motive ;n loaning the money to the RuchDrorppp company was to obtain sugar for Logansport. which was the original intention. However, more difficulty in obtaining the money was experienced than expected and when the loan was finally made, but thirtv days' time was given. "I knew nothing about resale of the sugar," declared the mayor. "I supposed it w-A.i to be sold in Logans-port."

Birtk" Draws Astounding

Crowd at Local Theatre Richmond motion picture attendance records were smashed Sunday at the opening performances of "Birth," the New York maternity hospital film that is showing at the Richmond theater until Tuesday night. Long before the opening hour many waited in the ticket line and when the picture was first flashed, on the screen the theater was filled, with many waiting for the second showing. While showing every delicate phase in detail regarding the proper care of the infant the many astounding scenes are flashed on the screen in a manner that one can only marvel ami not take offense. Nevertheless a startling scientific spectacle is presented portraying the necessity of careful and proper supervision at a period so necessary in the conservation of child life. All the scenes in "Birth" were taken in one of New York's largest maternity hospitals under Hie personal direction of medical experts and ia claimed to be absolutely correct in every detail and the only film of its kind ever made for a public showing. Everywhere that the film has been presented it has caused a sensation, being indorsed by medical authorities and social workers from coast to coast as a most remarkable offering. It is suggested that as many as possible attend the early matinee and evening showine.

The picture very closely follov. s the stage play of the same name which was written for Miss Brady by Owen Davis, and in which the actress successfully appeared for several months on Broadway. Miss Brady is cast as "Mary Horton," a country girl who goes to the city and is befriended by a woman of questionable reputation. Miss Brady is a pleasing, satisfactory and fortunately undemonstrative heroine. She registers emotion without overacting; is natural and convincing.
