'AGE FIVE

The Diary of an Engaged Girl 1

By Phyllis Phillips

I slept until so late this morning that I barely had time to get into ;

my ciomes ana rush to the studio before Jeffry and Aunt Cecilia arrived. It was a red-letter morning for me, for I was actually hostess In my very own place for once! You see, Jeff promised to sit for his portrait some time ago, and by degrees I imparted to Aunt Cecilia the great news about my having a studio.

Heaven knows it was hard to do, but

in the end I laughed at my own timidity, for I might have known that anyone who has been through the fires that aunty has been through would come up to any scratch. And she did. She laughed a wee bit and then shook her head solemnly at me until I hopped over and hugged her hard as I could, which always settles any argument with her, as I well know. And she wished me all the luck that she herself had never had! Now, I ask you if that wasn't sweet of her?

We decided to begin the portrait right away, for I want to exhibit it in the fall, and Aunt Cecilia, 1 Just know, wants to have it for her very own after that. It was too funny to watch their faces when they walked in and saw yours truly perched up properly on a stool and fairly well daubed up with yellow ochre, of which I was using plenty at the moment. BeBmocked, be-smeared and be-giggled I welcomed them Into my Liberty Hall. Now you know that man Jeffry, for all his former prejudices against studios, seemed tickled to death with my place and the first thing he said was: "Suits our Lindsey to a T, this room, doesn't it, Cecile?" She, blushingly, answered "yes." and the ice was broken. Jeffry has a

handsome head, heaps of dark chestnut hair, just turning a distinguished gray at the corners, and such a sensitive nose. I selected a large canvas and started in. Aunt Cecilia sat nearby, properly adoring. From the corner of my eyes 1 saw Aunt Cecilia drinking in every littlest detail of my studio with a rapt expression in her eyes. Once or twice she got up to look at something or other, and to peer out at the life in the street below. She had a splendiferous time, I can tell you. And once, during a rest period, Jeffry leaned over her and said: "Pretty sure we can fix up one like this for you. Cecile, at the top of our future ln,iii 1X7-il.4 ir-, llba if- rtoor'"

Aunt Cecilia fairly radiated her pleasure and It looked for a moment as though my studio were about to be turned Into a lovers' rendezAus, but Jeffry straightened up Just In time for me to continue with my work. I really got a fairly good start on

the thing and, unless I miss my guess, It's going to be one of the best things I have ever done. As we were about planning to knock off for the morning, there was a thud on the door and, in answer to my cheery invitation to "come on In," in breezed Brixy! I heard Aunt Cecilia give a rather confused little "oh" of surprise and then I Introduced Brixy to Jeff. That

was all for the time being. (To be continued.)

What's in a Name (Copyright)

f LETTY One of the "glad" names Is Letltia. It comes from the Latin adjective lactus, meaning glad, from which the substantive, "laetatla" was formed. Whether ancient Rome under-went a "glad" period, etymologists do not record, but the fact remains that Lactitia as a proper name was adopted by the fashionable maids and matrons of that by-gone empire. Laetitia first made her appearance as Letizia, a name favored by the Italians during the fashion for extreme novelty that prevailed in the Cinque-Cento. Spain adopted Letizia, but the name reached England in the form of Lettico. In Ireland Lettico was extremely

popular. One famous bearer of the name lattice Knollys, the wife of the

Karl of Essex. Lettitia was evolved in Ireland and is still a favorite with Irish lasses, though Letty, the diminutive, is by far the most popular form. Lettitia and Letty are both in vogue in this country. The touch of propriety which has become associated with Letitia has somewhat lessened her vogue, but Ietty flourished after the manner of all contractions in America. The turquoise is Letltia's talismanic stone. If set in gold, it will protect her from all danger, especially when traveling. According to an old legend, the stone will break at tho approach of evil. The best possible good luck is promised to Letty if she can see the new moon reflected in her turquoise. Saturday is her lucky day iind 1 her lucky number.

Heart Problems

Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a girl 15 years old. I am In the second year of high school. I am considered very pretty and I have always got three or four gentlemen admirers at one time. But my mother doft not allow me to have a regular beau. I only care for one young man. He Is 19 years of age and a senior In the same school. He seems to think a great deal of me Just by the way he acts. I haven't known him only about a month. One Sunday evening he called for me to go car riding. I did so and enjoyed It very much. On returning home he kept his arm around me and when he went to leave he kissed me good-bye. Do you think this so very unproper? Do you think a boy thinks Just as much (or more) of a girl "he is allowed to hug and kiss than the one he

is not? I love this fellow and would !

like to keep his friendship. Please

had plenty of opportunities to ask me to take another car ride or such, but he has not done so. One Sunday has passed since our car ride and I know he never went to see any other gir for I saw him at home. Do you thin he went to see her that night? H tells me everything that this girl tells him and laughs about it. Do you thin) he has entirely given her up. He wi! graduate this spring and is going off

to college and I'm afraid will forget me. Please tell me how I may keer his friendship forever if possible for 1 love him dearly. Yours for a prompt reply. O. K. M. Dear O. K. M.: I think you are quit.right in wishing to keep the friendship of your boy friends. Keep the friendship of all the nice young men you know. Friends are always delightful, but never gain them through false methods, and do not think a boy re spects a girl more for her letting him kiss her. Such sentimentality should be saved for real love. that is your role as a companion for a

Do not worry if you do not have "dates" all the time, but be a good companion whenever you are with your boy or girl friends, and do not be jealous of other girl friends. Jealousy should be abhorred and killed whenever it is felt, for it tends to know
