AUTO OR GAS? MAY BE CHOICE, SAYS N. JOHNSON, OF CITY
"Either water gas companies, or the automobile must go", said Nimrod Johnson, superintendent of the Richmond Light, Heat & Power company, Friday, after attending the meeting of
the Public Service commission in !
Indianapolis, Thursday. "It was the opinion of the Commission," continued Mr. Johnson, "that gasoline will be 50 cents a gallon within a. month. The Standard Oil Company doesn't have gas oil for sale any more, as they can take the gasoline out of the oil and sell it for much more then they can the original oil. They also have oil left to sell for sprinkling streets after this is done, The largest oil companies are now paying 16 cents a gallon for their oil instead of two cents, and hauling it in their own trucks. Will Appeal Congress. An appeal is to be made to Congress y the American Gas association, as the situation is becoming very critical." S. E. Mulholland of Fort Wayne, vice president of the Northern Indiana Gas and Electric Company, observed during the meeting Thursday that the high price of jewelry and seal skins have not retarded their use, but seems to have stimulated such purchases. '"It in not a question of the price of gas oil," Mr. Mulholland said, "but a question of getting any at all. It takes three and one-half gallons of oil for 1,000 cubic feet of gas containing a neat value of 570 British thermal units. The only way to conserve the oil is to reduce the heat standard." Must All Reduce Standard. Fred Bates Johnson, a member of ihe commission, believed that it. would be of little value to Indiana to reduce the standard If other states did not. Hr. Mulholland declared that some one tiad to lake the lead and that other fctates would follow. The conference was concluded by "the adoption of resolutions designed to start a national movement to conserve pas oil by Informing the members of oilier state commissions, the Federal authorities and the executive committee of the National Association of Rail--way and Utility commissioners of the Indianapolis meeting.
