The Art Association Often an institution does a vast amount of meritorious work in a quiet and unassuming way. The years roll by and its contributions to the promotion of the city's happiness and welfare are hardly noticed. The Richmond Art association belongs to this class. It is almost impossible to chronicle its benefits or to measure the worth of its endeavors, for it develops an intangible civic spirit and an elusive cultural purpose, which do not lend themselves to appraisement by monetary values or measurement by visible standards. The Art association, since its inception, has been of incalculable value to Richmond. From its humble origin and its first exhibits, it has gradually, year by year, increased the scope of its activity, while it has planted in the hearts of thousands, who have viewed its displays of paintings, a genuine love for art and a lasting ap

preciation of the beautiful. The best test of the popularity of a movement is the interest the community takes in it. No one who has visited an exhibit of paintings in the art gallery could have failed to notice that the visitors were representative of our whole community life. Not only the artists of the city,

and the students of art, but also men and women, in surprisingly large numbers, who are not intimately acquainted with the requirements of high art, took pleasure in admiring the pictures. Therein lies the true test of the value of the association and the significant proof that the organization is fulfilling its mission in this community. The citizenship of this city has an abiding love for art. It was developed and nurtured by the Art association, which has made its influence potent not only in the community generally but

also in the inculcation of a true appreciation of art in our educational system. The indoctrination of our boys and girls with a sense of true art values is an accomplishment that will perpetuate the work of the founders of the association. The development of the association to its present prestige has not been without its attendant discouragements, setbacks, heartaches and disappointments. Financially, it has struggled against great odds, and some of its leaders, in self-sacrificing spirit, have given generously of their own money to foster and continue the organization. The public seldom hears of .these gifts, vicariously given for the general good and effective in their development of better citizenship. The Art association is one of Richmond's best assets. Through its exhibits it affords us delectable relaxation and opportunity to enjoy the beauties of nature, pictorially displayed by the artists of our city and state and those of nation

al and international renown. Visitors to our city are impressed with the accomplishments of the association, and glad to sound our praises elsewhere. All of us hope that the association will continue to prosper, to increase its activities, to widen the scope of its accomplishments and to perpetuate a love, in young and old, for art.

v ; JOY Before me in my library is a most beautiful bronze about twenty inches tall. It represents a young nude female. It stands gracefully erect, with its head tilted back in a delicious smile. Its outstretched arms hold firmly a new-born baby. And the baby is smiling, too. The sculptor was a woman. So that each delicate curve was fashioned In understanding. This little bronze looks up at me when I enter my room and as I write. It is a wonderful inspiration to me. I wish that it might look into the very heart of every one of my helpful readers. 1 wish that its Bpirit might become a part of the atmosphere of the big world. Its creator gave this this exquisite piece the name of "Joy." I am aware that there is probably more sorrow and disappointment in the world than there is of joy. But I am also aware of the fact that joy

is largely a matter of attitude. It's
