John Bull and Foreign Trade
We need not tax our memories hard to re
member that only a few months ago John Bull
was frantically appealing to America for finan
cial aid. We were told that if we did not extend
him vast credits, his whole industrial organiza
. tion would fall to pieces and we would be engulf-
' ed with him in the catastrophe.
Astute Americans who had not permitted ! mawkish sentiment to befuddle their business ' judgment saw behind this appeal a shrewd move ! on England's part to obtain American loans in
order that she might fortify herself in the mar
kets of the world.
What do the developments of the last weeks
show? "In the year following the war, British for
eign trade was the greatest in her history," says
Francis Sisson, president of the Guaranty Trust company of New York. "English traders are in
all world markets. British export business lor
1919 was 123 per cent greater than for 1918. Her foreign trade in January of this year was greater than that of the United States. This supplies an
economic lesson for the United States."
But do we catch the moral and apply the les
son?
While we have been forced to stand by while
a gigantic coal, steel and switchmen's strike paralyzed our industries temporarily, and prevented
us from satisfying domestic demands for goods, the English people began to buckle down to work and to produce results. The 123 per cent increase in her exports tells the story. We have had the markets of the world in our hands for three years. Blessed with natural resources, equipped with a wonderfully potential industrial organization, supplied with ingenious mechanics and artisans, there was nothing we lacked to become the masters of the world's commerce but the disposition to work. We preferred to work three days and loaf
three. We chose to strike at the slightest provocation. We elected to stand in idleness while others worked with might. We put the brakes on the great machine of production. And today England, which a few months ago, in suppliant mood, even if for sinister purpose, begged for money, is gaining what she set out to win trade, continued prosperity, riches for all. After all the real victory of the war was won by England. She will control the markets of the world, for Germany, her old rival, has been effectively throttled.

THE SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE. All great things are wrapped underneath a covering of the impossible before they are attempted. The Infinite God meant it that way so a8 to dot the earth with men. If you want inspiration to come to you as you look toward your task, you must first shako hands with the thing that people say you can't do. And then you get the spirit, you begin to see light, you feel the intangible taking upon tangibility the impossible becoming perfectly possible. The life that, we all live is pomejjhat of a relailve dream after all. We ought to become expert at seeing visions at onsets. We ought at every early stage to become personally conversant with all the "knows" and "phalls" and "wills' and "sures" of our caliber. So that, wo might preceed with great expectancy. For then we would be doers sure enough. Expect the seemingly impossible to be around. It. always has been. Of course the thing looks too big, too intricate, and too arduous. If it looked easy you would under-rstimate its worth, both to you and to the world. And that's what the enmy of a common man or of a great army general most desires. I write to those who daily face the seemingly impossible none others. In you rests a fine part in the development and shaping of freedom and democracy In the world. You are a possibility of the thing you see done,. You are the salt of the earth without which it is sure to lose its savor!

Pneumonia attacks the air cells of the lungs.' An inflammation is set up and matter is thrown off which causes the air cells to solidify, thus preventing the natural flow of blood thru the lungs. This "backing up" of the blood causes the heart to pump harder, just as stepping on a hose increases the water pressure, which is the reason why, during this disease, the physician watches the overburdened heart so carefully.' After recovery the lungs are filled with a mass of wreckage the debris of the battle which must be gotten rid of by a process known, as resolution . Frequently , inflamed spots remain, congestion persists, cough hangs on, and the least exposure brings on a cold that is hard to get rid of. If neglected, such damaged air passages may easily develop serious disease of the lungs. Such cases should always continue under a physician's care and frequent examinations should be made to see that nature is

properly continuing the rebuilding process. Nightly applications of Vick's VapoRub will aid nature in this work. Because Vicks acts locally by stimulation thru the skin to draw out the inflammation, attract the blood away from the congested spots and relieve the cough. In addition, the medicinal ingredients of Vicks are vaporized by the body heat. These vapors are breathed in all night long, thus bringing the medication to bear directly upon the inflamed areas. 4 Vicks should be rubbed in over the throat and chest until the skin is red then spread on thickly and covered with hot flannel cloths. Leave the cloth ing loose around the neck and the bed clothes arranged in the form of a funnel so the vapors arising may be freely inhaled. If the cough is annoying, swallow a small bit of Vicks the size of a pea. Samples to new users will be sent free on request to the Vick Chemical Company, 232 Broad Street, Greensboro, N C.
