Women Outnumber Men Ten to One in Paraguay WASHINGTON "Paraguay la peri haps less known to Americans than j any of the South American countries," : remaxlied Henry Hulme. of Texas. , . , .i utim.i. ! ben in W asnlngton recently. rWlth i its lii.si square mues, u is consiaerably larger than the state of California, and its population is less than 800-00,0- f thla number there are probably 100,000 that are wild Indians, and a large majority of the remaining 700.000 are still classed as illiterate. Women outnumber the men ten to one, and this is something of a gain , for the male sex. for fifty years ago. ; it is said the proportion was twentyfive women to one man. "Paraguay has been a peaceful nation for fifty years. Prior to 1870 Paraguay's principal occupation was fighting, but the lack, of man power to carry on warfare brought a stop to the fighting, not, however, until after there had been several sanguinary campaigns. The principal wars were' with Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, and while Paraguay had the best sol- ' dlers in all south America tney coma not siana up agai n? numbers that Jgca ta , is Ba,d that flveJ five-sixths of Paraguay's lopulatlon perished in her wars, and it was the remaining sixth that established the apparently stable government that now exists. "There has not been a great deal of Hevelopment In the fifty years of peace however. Thl3 is not surprising when it is considered that three-fourths of ' ... .... ... . tbe population are still in me wooa?. less than 10 per cent, of the people ' living in the cities. Necessarily Paraguay does very little business with this country, but there Is opportunity for considerable reciprocal commerce, and there are fine chances for making money in the country."
