Stock Selling Schemes
And still they come. The stock selling promoters. Armed with glittering and glowing pros
pects, flashing patterns and promises, they try to convince us that our dollars will grow if we exchange them for beautifully engrossed stock certificates.
The companies they represent usually have no earnings. They are simon pure prospects. Their assets too often consist only of promises
of great dividends to come, of patterns of new in "ventions, of prospects of golden rewards.
A meritorious project usually does not go
'"begging for backers. Capital is only too eager to
snaD ud an onoortunity to make money. It is
unnecessary to give stock salesmen from 20 to 50
per cent of the subscriptions to sell the stock.
Salesmen of these companies use every bit of persuasion at their command to sell stock because their commission is from one-fourth to one-half of what you pay them for the stock. If you have money to invest, don't exchange it for a stock certificate of a company that has no backing and is rich in promises. Don't let the salesman cloud your judgment by pointing to the big returns made by other companies that are in the same business. The success of the established companies did not come over night. It is the result of years of hard labor, of careful management, of the solution of infinite details. The money you pay for stocks in new companies is invested in a highly speculative venture. Nine times out of ten you are gambling. You have more chance for getting your money back if you toss a coin to see who is to take the money on the table. The best way to assure yourself of the sound
ness of a venture is to accompany the salesman to
a reputable banker. He will tell you if the company has a chance of returning dividends, or if it is a stock promotion venture in which you will lose your money.
Today's Talk By George Matthew Adame
TURN YOUR DISAPPOINTMENTS INTO OPPORTUNITIES There Is a good deal said about "the break of luck." I do not believe that there is much to luck at all. No road is smooth all the way. And there is no such thing as perfect happiness or perfect success. I believe more in co-operation than in competition, though I am firm in the telief that opposition is necessary to anything worth while. Opposition ofttlmes brings disappointment but disappointment brings opportunity. ' But mless you are able to muster your forces of belief quickly at such times, your opportunity is apt to turn to a grand ghost and leave ycu high nd lonely far from a good port and no one or thins in sight. So do this: Turn your disappointments immediately into opportunities! Opportunities loom JuBt the minute that you begin to look for them. Intangible in themselves, they become ;very tangible when will and initiative I begin to talk things over. The whole world begins to expand for such a one. You are never alone in disappointment. You are at once the kin of all. Keep looking ahead. Try to locate the furthest etars. Bear up buck up. For everybody's sake, don't whine. Break into a dead run. Why, hoi Look who's here a whole battalion of opportunities!
Dinner Stories
The children were telling a visitor what they studied at school. "I." said the eldest, "get reading, spelling and definitions." "And what do you get, my little man?" said the visitor, addressing the littlest one, who had listened in a bored way while the others recited
"Oh, I dets readin' spellin' and spankin.' "I have more respect for a bull than I used to have." "How so?" "Ixjok how he takes after a red flag."
"There's an atmosphere of wealth about this home." - "Do you judge from the size of the house, the ample garage in the rear, the maid sweeping down the front steps and a gardener busy on the lawn?" "No; I JudJje ly the size of the dog on the verarr'j. Anybody who can p.fford to feed a Groat Dane these days must have plenty of money."

Says His Prescription Has Powerful Influence Over Rheumatism
Discoverer Tells Druggist Not to Take a Cent of Anyone's Money Unless Allenrhu Completely Banishes All Rheumatic Pains and Twinges. Mr. James H. Allen suffered for years with rheumatism. Many times this terrible disease left him helpless and unable to work. He finally decided, after years of ceaseless study, that no one can be free from rheumatism until the accumulated impurities, commonly called uric acid deposits, were dissolved in the joints and muscles and expelled from the body. With this idea in mind he consulted physicians, made experiments and finally compounded a prescription that quickly and completely banished every sign and symptom of rheumatism from his system. He freely gave his discovery to others who took it. with what might be called marvelous success. After years of urging he decided to let sufferers everywhere know about his discovery through the newspapers. Your druggist has been appointed agent for Allenrhu in this vicinity with the understanding that he will freely return the purchase money to all who state they received no benefit. Advertisement.

"I Just feel so much better that I want my friends and neighbors to know what it was that brought me out," are the words of Mr. Harrison Lloyd of Route 5, Marion, Ind., who is a well known farmer. "I've always suffered from constipation; had pains in my back, kidneys acted bad and had rheumatism in my shoulders, which annoyed me very much. On top of this I had Flu, which left me in a very weakened condition; seemed I couldn't get my strength back. I got to where I didn't want to go to the dining room at all, for the sight of food made me sick at the stomach. "I noticed in the papers where people were praising Dreco so high, so went to town and got a bottle, and now I can't praise this medicine enough. It gave me a good appetite; stopped the backache and pains in my shoulders; got my bowels moving regularly; in fact it has helped me in every way. I am taking a bottle home to my sister, as she needs a good medicine to strengthen her up, and I know Dreco will do it." Dreco is the pure liquid extract ot many roots, herbs, barks and leaves, which act on the vital organs of the human body. After taking Dreco it is noticed that the stomach Is 60othed and the gassy condition eliminated; the liver becomes active, relieving headaches, that dull, tired-out feeling; nerves are quieted, which induces sound sleep. The kidneys are strengthened; appetite increased; bowels act with ease and regularity, and the whole system takes on renewed energy, vigor and vitality. Dreco is harmless, pleasant to take and the effects ara quickly felt All progressive druggists now sell Dreco and it is being especially Introduced In Richmond by Clem Thistlethwaite's Six Drug Stores. 34 Years Work,
THAT is the kind of increase in salary the minister has received. His living: expenses
have risen just as fast and as far as yours. But he is paid on the average just 52 cents more per church member than he was paid 34 years ago. The Minister Never Fails Yoa . Every officer of the Government with a war message to deliver appealed to the ministers first of all. But 80 of the ministers receive less income than government economists figure as a minimum for the support of an average family. v When hospitals need money they enlist the support of the ministers and receive it But when sickness visits the minister or the members of his family they must be treated in a charity ward. His pay is less than a day laborer's. We Pay Him Half the Wages of a Mechanic 8 out of every 10 ministers receive less than $20 a week about half the pay of a mechanic. And of these pitifully inadequate salaries, how much do you contribute? Nothing if you are outside the church; an average of less than 3c a day if you are a church member. All of us share in the benefits of Christian ministers to the community. They marry us ; bury us ; baptize our children ; visit us when we are sick. In their hands is the spiritual training of the youth. We Are All Profiteers at Their Expense Part of the Interchurch World program is this a living wage for every minister of Jesus Christ; an efficient plant and a chance to do a big man's job. If you want better preachers, help to pay the preachers better. It's the best investment for your community and for your children that you can make.
