Every, inhabitant of every town has an Interest in the census figures. This unusual interest is recognized by ; newspapers tnttm facilities- they have j provided whereby - the census news ; can be flashed at the earliest moment; after the release hour at the Census; Bureau. Mr. Hamilton, the bureau's publicity director, formerly was a newspaper man at South Bend, and later was fin assistant in the Btate legislative reference bureau in the State House at Indianapolis. It is his word "Go" which starts the census news over the wire each week day. Laporte Gains 44 Per Cent Laporte, Ind., which John F. Havs. secretary to Senator Watson, claims as his home town and which also is the city which gives the Indiana Legislature, its Senator Beardsley, should be swelled with pride that the census figures show that it has made a 44 per cent increase since 1910. In 20 years it has a little more than doubled its population. The 1920 figures are 15,158. Huntington, Ind., also has made a highly creditable increase. Its 1920 population Is an even 14,000, which is an increase of 36.3 per cent. Between 1900 and 1910 Huntington gained only M m inhabitants, but between 1910 and 2'J20 it has become the home of 3,728 fiew citizens. DR. M. C. BALDWIN Dr. Minor C. Baldwin, a musician of international repute, will give a pipe organ recital at St. Mary's church Friday night. Technically his, work is perfect. His fingering is miraculous, his tone shading beautiful. The way in which Dr. Baldwin operates the foot pedals is wonderfully clever. Birds of Indiana You May Not Know (Furnished by the State Department of Conservation) The brown thrasfier is a cousin of the catbird. Like the golden winged j woodpecker, it has many names, some of which are "brown thrush", "ground thrush," "tawny thrush", "red thrush." "brown mockingbird", "French mockingbird" and "English mockingbird." The upper part Qf.the body is a red-, dish-brown, darkest on the wings; wings short, heavy and reaching back only to the base of the tail; tail long and well rounded and opens and shuts I like a fan; under parts of the body white, with black spots forming longitudinal streaks. The femals may be distinguished from the male by the white on the wings being much narrower, and the spots in the breast less. They have a length of about eleven and a half inches and a wing extent of about thirteen inches. The brown thrasher is a migrant whose range etends from the Gulf States north to Manitoba, Maine and Ontario, and west to the Rocky Mountains. It comes north the latter part of March and in April, and returns south in September and October. According to Professor .Tudd the proportion of the different elements of their iood, as determined by an examination of 121 stomachs collected, showed: Animal matter, 62 per cent, vegetable matter 35 and mineral 2. He adds that their economical relation' to agriculture may be summed up as follows: Two-thirds of the bird's food is animal; the vegetable food is mostly fruit but taken from cultivated crops is offset by three times that volumn of insects which disturbs the balance of nature and threatens our welfare. TWO FARM CLUBS TO MEET AT. OXFORD, O. OXFORD, O., April 13. The Oxford Farmers' Club will hold its April meeting Thursday at the home of W. K. Swan, west of town. The program will include a paper on "Outdoor Ornamentation" by Mrs. G. W. Fudge, and a discussion of the diseases and enemies of plants, their prevention and cure, by Harry L. Brown. Wayne Stephenson, C. E. Sehultz, William H. Stephenson and G. W. Fudge. The Practical Farmers' Club will be entertained Thursday by Mr. .and Mrs. Vt. M. Black, of College Corner. Mrs. Alvin C. Gaston will read a paper on Neighborhood Borrowing," and Morton Jones, B. M. Black and George King will discuss road building and maintenance. DENISON CLOSES SUNDAY; THEATRE TO BE BUILT The Denison hotel, for 58 years one of the leading hotels of Indianapolis, will close its doors Sunday, according to announcement made yesterday by Crawford Fairbanks, owner of the hotel. Guests will be received at the hotel Saturday night, but must leave Sunday. Samuel O. Dowdcn, counsel for the heirs of D. P. Erwiu, who own the building, said that negotiations for lease or the property ar pending. It is understood that a group of capitalists is negotiating for the lease and plans to erect a combination theatre and office building on the site. HUMBLE SPUD KITIN' IN HIGH COMPANY; SEEDS ARE HIGHER There was-a. time when -Irish potatoes were as plentiful and cheap as the dirt in which they grew, but that time has passed, and today the price of seed potatoes vary from $4.00 to $6.00 a bushel, and are scarce at that price. .... With high prices now, it is evident that the crop this fan will be short, end potatoes, will be higher than ever , before. Many people "have hesitated in .purchasing seed potatoes because of ,the high price, thinking "that the price s.may come down, but many local deal ers look for the price to go higher per bushel. Many of the " small " growers,- or , gardener, will probably not plant seed potatoes because of the high cost, with no assurance of a. hountiful crop. But while the seed potatoes are advancing, the kind that people use on their table as a food are gone almost out of sight, and will probably go higher. Acreage To Be Small. Farmers who have investigated the seed potato market predict that the acreage ' will be much smaller than usual because of the high price. Especially will this be true in the case of farmers who are forced to buy their seed, it is said. Potatoes are not regarded as a certain crop in this locality and it is said that tire exceedingly high price for seed will cause many growers to plant only what they will need for their own use during the coming winter. It is pointed out that when seed potatoes are ?6 exorbitantly high in nrice the scrower does not feel justified in risking much investment in a crop that Is generally regarded as uncertain in its return. Then there may be a big crop In Michigan and other potato growing states during the summer which would mean that the price next fall would bo considerably less and the total cost of the seed and work in tenrHnfr the cron would not be suf ficient to pay a revenue to the land owners. Local gardeners, and the indications now are that there will he many of them this summer, pre finding that the prices of nearly all kinds of garden peed have advanced. Onions are slightly higher than a year ago, and packnp.s of seed are somewhat smaller, while the price on the average is a little higher or about the same. The only difference in these two grades would be that one is pasjjiurized and the other sold as raw milk. - Two other grades would be known as Grade B, raw, and Grade B, pasteurized. It would be labeled to indicate that it Is" nol'milk of the "best quality. Objections- raised to the grades aa established, by the board of health are that they cannot be adequately enforced in the smaller cities a-nd towns. The Theatres WASHINGTON.
