THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM, TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 1920.
Former Navy Men May Re-enlist, Word Is Received Authority has been received by the local naval recruiting station to enlist ex-service men who have held the following ratings in the U. S. Navy, for submarine duty: Boatswain's mates, quartermasters, gunner's mates, seamen, machinist's mates, quartermasters, gunner's mates, seamen, machinist's mates, electricians, enginemen and ship's cooks. They have their choice of submarine bases located at New London, Conn., or San Pedro, Cal., for assignment to duty. Men going to New London will be assigned to submarines on the Atlantic Coast, and as far as possible will be assigned to the submarines which they request. Submarines are permanently assigned to New London, Conn., Hampton Roads, Va., Key West. Fla.. Coco Solo. Canal Zone, and two divisions with the Atlantic Fleet. On the West Coast they are based at San Pedro, Cal., and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The following advantages are to be derived from service in the submarines: Men on board submarines receive $5.00 per month extra pay, and after qualifying as a submarine man each man receives $1.00 per dive, up to $15.00 a month for fifteen dives. Thus a qualified man may get as high as $20.00 per month extra money, the average being from $15.00 to $20.00. Also due to the fact that a crew consist of from 25 to 35 men, all of whom with the exception of one or two are supposed to be rated men, the chances for promotion are very good. With the construction of the Raud S type of boats many of the discomforts and hardships, which characterized tliR older types will be eliminated, and there will be an opportunity for extensive cruising. Full information concerning the above can be obtained at the Navy Recruiting Station, Sth and Main streets. Why Society Women Wash Their Own Hair They do, not because it is a fad, but because they wish to obtain the greatest possible hair beauty and be sure they are not using anything harmful. They have found that in washing the hair it is never wise to use a makeshift, but is always advisable to use a preparation made for shampooing only. Many of our friends say they get the best results from a simple home-made canthrox mixture. You can use this at a cost of about 3 cents a shampoo by getting some canthrox from your druggist and dissolving a teaspoonful in a cup of hot water. This makes en ough shampoo liquid to apply to all the hair instead of just the top of the head, as with most preparations. Dandruff, excess oil and dirt are dissolved and entirely disappear in the rinsing water. Your hair will be so fluffy that it will look much heavier than it is. Its luster and softness will also delight you. Advertisement.
