The Passing of a Great Man John Alfred Brashear, Pennsylvania's foremost citizen, honored among men of scientific training all over the world, is dead at his home in Pittsburg. Mr. Brashear's name was not so widely known in America as that of many movie stars or politicians, but nevertheless this unassuming man, who rose from the grimy millwright to the foremost instrument maker for astronomical work, made for himself a niche in America's hall of fame. Years ago he became interested in astronomy and astronomical instruments. By day he toiled in the shops, by night he perfected instruments to carry on his study of the stars. He sought no recognition. For years he was satisfied to pursue the even tenor of his way, grinding away. in the factories and pursuing his avocation by night. For many years America depended on European masters for fine instruments. Our savants did not know that a humble American mechanic was perfecting instruments that presently would win the admiration of European artisans, bring to their maker signal honors, and transfer leadership in the industry to this country. When he was discovered, respect for his ability soon put him in possession of the money and tools needed to turn out the finest astronomical instruments of the-century. When the retiring

and modest American placed the output of his genius by the side of the products of the best European shops, he was enthusiastically received by the scientific instrument makers of Europe. His visits to Europe were the occasions for great ovations. Owners of plants considered themselves greatly honored to escort the former millwright through their plant and the workmen enthusiastically paid tribute to his genius. His honors came to him unsolicited. They were doubly significant because his own competitors were big enough to appreciate the worth of his achievements and to accord him the honors he deserved. ' His struggle for eminence was an arduous one. For 20 long years he labored in the steel mills. Then he made his first telescope to study the stars. Ten more years elapsed before he turned wholly to the manufacture of telescopic instruments. He was unspoiled by the honors that came his way. The products of his firm were given freely to the world. He had no patents and secrets. He placed the result of his years of study before the world, satisfied to know that

he had contributed to the general fund of knowledge. , Pittsburg honored its grand citizen when he was still a resident of the city. - It did not wait until his death to pour out a full measure of it3 appreciation, but showed its affection in many ways and by many tokens. When death came his city honored him a3 one of its great men. Mr. Brashear was of that rare type of which the world has seen but few. He lived an unselfish life, content to work hard that others might benefit by his toil, happy in the execution of tasks before which others would have quailed. The world may draw inspiration from the career of a man of his character. The sordid selfishness of the mercenary spirit must feel ashamed to compare its motives with the benevolent achievemnets of this scientist.

Today's Talk By George Matthew Adams

MRS. BRANDE She is past eighty now. She lives In a little town in Iowa. I used to play in her backyard when I was a toy in high school. And she used to save glorious tasting cakes for me. There are few women, hidden back in the years, to whom my thought loves more to run, than to Mrs. Brande. I never knew anyone more unselfish, more full of thoughtfulness for others, or more genuine in sincerity of soul. There was nothing narrow about her. Her face was always like a ripe sun. Everybody, rich or poor, loved her. She was always planning something to make somebody else happy. Mrs. Brando was a great church woman. Her husband was a minister. But hers was not a religion of sect or of creed. Nor was her church some building where she went to pay off a duty. Rather, church became for her but a medium thru which she might express her natrual, gracious self in service. In a larger sense, Mrs. Brande's church was the Everywhere. I have known her to go thru great rorrow and to experience about every strain of test that can come to a human being; but I never knew her to lose her sweetness or beauty of being. I can fully understand the very lovely devotion that the son of this mother always delighted to render. There are Mrs. Brandes In every community. The town in which my own mother lived had one. And It was she. I know that there is a Heaven somewherefor the Mrs. Brandes would have to have one, God bless them!
