STATE DISCUSSION; SAGKMAN ENTERED, SET FOR APRIL 23

Under the auspices of the Indiana University extension division, the Indiana state high school oratorical contest, la 'Which James Sackman, of Richmond high school, is entered, will be held at Bloomington Friday night, April 23. Sackman won the district contest at ConnersvIUe last week. "What Shall We Do With Our Railroads?" Is the question to be discussed. The main question is whether the Escb-Cummins bill furnishes a satisfactory solution of the railroad problem. The county contests for the discussion were completed March 26. Representatives from these contests appeared In the district contests on Friday, April 9, and the winning sectional debaters will be sent to the congressional contests which will be held at Bloomington, Friday afternoon, April 23. Gold Medal to Be Awarded. During the afternoon representatives from the 13 congressional districts will deliver their views on the railroad problem, and the six to deliver the best speeches will participate in the final contest that night. A gold medal will be awarded to the student who wins the discussion, a silver to the one winning second place, and a bronze medal to the one ranking third.

FARM WORK PAUSED IN WEEK-BRYANT

Railroad strikes and stormy weather last week tended to bring farm work to a standstill In Indiana, according to the weekly crop report Issues by George C. Bryant, field agent co-operating with the Indiana Crop Reporting Service. The report follows: "Very unseasonable weather condi

tions stopped outdoor farm work. Spring plowing and seeding is being seriously retarded. Railroad strike has caused an embargo to be placed on shipments of grain and live stock. "Many wheat fields are very spotted, but this is due mostly to the ravages of Hessian fly rather than winter killing. The lowest condition Is found in the southern part of the state and the highest in the central part. The spring wheat acreage for Indiana will not be over 25 per cent of last year. "Nearly all the oats have been seeded In the south part of the state but i,n the north part farmers are much behind with this work. "The rye fields generally are in very good condition. Some of the low spots, however, were smothered by ice staying on too long. Clover Acreage Great. "The clover acreage will be largely increased this year because of the slowing ut of grain and live stocl

production. Much clover seeding has already been done. "Killing frosts damaged some of the earlier truck crops during the week. "With the possible exception of the earlier varieties of peaches and cherries none of the fruit crops has been damaged by the severe weather of the past week. "Farm labor continues very scarce and hard to get at any price. "All live stock Is in good condition."

The American legion will make special efforts to obtain the passage by Congress at this session of the Rogers bill, which provides for the consolidation of the Federal board of vocational training, the War Risk Insurance bureau and the United States public health service under one head and made responsible to a Cabinet officer. This decision was announced at legion national headquarters yesterday by Lemuel Bolles, chairman of the special committee of three appointed by National Commander Franklin DXDlier to make recommendations for the relief of disabled veterans.
