The Farm and By William R. "The farmer with one or more tennant houses has much less trouble in Becuring help than the farmer who cannot offer a family a home," said Itrchard B. Garden Good Investment, Even on the Farm; Fresh Vegetables Worth While By W. R. SANBORN. The second edition of winter has cheeked the sale of garden seeds, according to dealers. The sale had been quite lively during the previous week and all indications point to very liberal planting of back lots and vacant spaces again this spring. This is a mrghty good habit to encourage, not merely because of war time prices but for the exercise affordI ed end the satisfaction of seeing the things grow under our fostering care. In addition to this is the enjoyment of fresh vegetables at the simple cost of healthful and pleasurable effort. A well-kept home garden may not be a joy forever but it is a real comfort and economy from season to season, and never more so than in these times save. lhe saving represented by a good garden will be a mighty comforting asset next winter, if duly deposited in your savings account. Birds of Indiana You May Not Know . j tFurnished by the State Department of Conservation) The wood thrust is the largest of our thrushes except the robin, classified in this family by ornithologists. It is about eight inches long and has a wing extent of about 13 inches. Their general color is a cinnamon brown, brighter and more rufous on the crown and more olive on the tail: beneath, including the sides, white, with the breast and sides marked with roundish and heart-shaped spots of dark brown. The wood thrush is a migrant. If. comes north about the middle of April and lhe first of May, and returns south about the first of October. Its range extends north from Honduras and the Bermudas through eastern United States to Quebec, and west to Kansas and Xorth Dakota. It winters south from Florida and Texas, and breeds from Georgia and southern Mississippi north throughout its northern range. It frequents copses, groves of young trees and rocky glens and this is especially so if there is water nearby. Seventy-two per cent of the food of this thrush consists of insects, the greater portion of them being groundinhabiting worms. Twenty per cent consists of fruits, much of which are wild fruits obtained from their haunts. The song of the thrush is credited by many ornithologists as the most, beautiful as compared to a long list of birds. AIRPLANES TO CUBA. Today's Talk By George Matthew Adams PAST PERFORMANCE. I once heard a famous governor begin a speech with theso words: "I would rather have been a monkey 20 years ago, and a man now, than to have been a man then and a monkey now!" All events pass quickly to make way for new ones. No man can long stand on past performance. It is.,vhat you are today that counts. Yesterday is merely a part of the road that leads thru today to tomorrow. We must be interested only in how we walk over the path today. You may have stumbled yesterday but be thankful to God that you can walk straight today! Hinge nothing on past performance. If what you did yesterday holds merit, use its inspiration to lead you further on today. Find in your work the glory that only work can hold. Keep going forward. Never stand still. And never allow mistakes to hold you up. Pass on pass on. Many a man lives into years of idle deadness, trying to make the performances of the past stand him in stead. But you leave your past performances as outgrown shells and into newer endeavor enter with heart and zest. Take life with you hour by hour. A.nd always try to leave your best behind. But keep before you the vision of that which shall be better than your best! DIAMONDS IN AMERICA. Last year was the greatest year in the history of the diamond importers in the United States.
