NEED FOR STRONG TEACHING PROGRAM URGED AT MEETING Two hundred persons attended the educational banquet given Wednesday at 6:30 p. m. at the Reld Memorial church, In connection with the North Indiana M. E. conference. Dr. George R. Grose, president of DePauw University, presided. Dr. Abrani W. Harris, of New York City, general secretary of the Board of Education of the Methodist Episcopal church, opened his brief address with these words: "Education Is one of the greatest things in the world, and one about which people are the least enthusiastic" "Standardizing institutions In a sane and sensible way la a very Important thing," continued Dr. Harris. He pointed out that the great educational need In the Methodist church Is money to pay teachers and to save the teaching profession. "The great emergency the general conference must meet when it convenes in May is the need of funds for Methodist Colleges. Everything done for the young men and the young women of the church Is just that much c'one for the future," concluded the Combine Religion, Teaching. Putting a religious program in the educational system was strongly advocated by Dr. James A. James, dean of ihe graduate school of Northwestern University, In a short hut emphatic address on general education. The religious program that is being tested in Northwestern University was explained by the speaker. In his opinion an adjustment in the educational program of this country Is necessitated by the return of the men from war. "We must aid the Wesley institutions but we must also help those other institutions that have proven ihemselves Christian Institutions. More stress must be laid on the Bible, ' service and religious education. Life s-ervice is an important question with students now more than ever before. More and more they are coming to ask themselves "How can I devote my life to the best advantage?' " In conclusion Dr. James urged religious education in the' educational system, religions training in the colleges and a religious program for all school communities. Outlines System's Needs. Bishop Nicholson followed with a brief talk on the needs of the educational system. "Methodism has no single interest greater than its interest in its educational institutions." He emphasized that the Board of Education had outlined a financial program in older that liberal amounts might i.p Eiven to the colleges. "We have a great problem before i;s in aiding our great educational leaders to put into effect a religious program that will make our young students good laymen" Bishop Nicholson paid.
