The Automobile's Birthday
un Apru l, leys, the first automobile was commercially sold in the United States. Since then millions of cars have been manufactured and
sold in this country, the output last year exceed ing 1,250,000.
The industry in the last 22 years has grown with marvelous speed until today it ranks third in
the industries of the United States and employs more than three-quarters of a million persons in
factories and shobs.
In 1913 tWe were only 1,009,513 automobiles
in use in this country, but by 1919 the number had grown-to 5,945,442. The wholesale value of
cars in 1918 was estimated to be $801,937,925
The output and its value for 1920 will be far in
excess of that sum.
The novelty of owning a car, which undoubt
edly prompted many of the first purchasers to in
vest, has been replaced by a utilitarian purpose which no one can gainsay. The automobile and
truck have become indispensable in our national economy. It has been the greatest annihilator of distance that has ever been invented, except the
flying machine which, however, has not been perfected sufficiently for practical purposes. The automobile has had a powerful effect in developing good roads in the United States. Thousands of miles of highway have been permanently improved and other thousands have been put into a high state of repair and kept there. The demand for good roads has encouraged engineers to make a study of road materials
and construction, with the end in view of devising
a method of road construction that will be durable
"and cheap.
If the automobile had made no other contribution to the internal improvement of our coun
try than to induce the construction of good roads it would have been a boon. The greater part of the automobile taxes, paid by the owners, has gone back into the roads. Improved highways from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the Canadian line to the Mexican frontier speak eloquently of the beneficent influence of the automobile.

Today's Talk By George Matthew Adams
DONALD ROSS I am a sort of worshipper of great men. I am not particular as to their special bent a great man is great, whether he be a noted general, writer, artist, statesman,', musician, or whatnot. Greatness is not so mucb a matter of what a man does to make him great, as of what he is. You are always able to feel a great man. Just the minute you come into his presence, you know that character is around. ' I recently met a man by the name of Donald Ross. I had heard of him for years. First, he is a gentleman. Second, he is a famous golf player. Third, he is the most wonderful golf architect in the world. Fourth, he is a great man. About 20 years ago, Donald Ross came to America. He was a fine golf player even then. And he had ideas. Every golf pluyer in the country will tell you that for he has probably worried more men, including the writer, who have been so unfortunate as to get iato his line traps and bunkers, than any other man of his sort. This is what Donald Ross told me: "If you want to find out the caliber of a man, take him out and . play golf with him three times. You will know whether you will want him in business with you or whether you want him as a friend." Donald Ross is the same superb stamp of athlete as Alonzo Stagg. When the famous football player, Eckersall, graduated from Chicago university, he said that Stagg taught character as well as football. Well, that's what Ross does. A man is a poor man, indeed, who doesn't get at once the fine spirit thai, radiates from this sportsman. Golf is wonderful. It will reveal and it will develop character as no other game. And Donald Ross is as splendid an exemplification of the greatness of this game as any man in tha world. And he has done more for it. He came from Scotland, but he is an American now, thank God! But I think that the finest thing about Ross is his democracy. I have seen him happy as a lark playing with a 6mall boy, and everybody, rich or poor, is his friend if they are genuine.
friend of ours, "when a man could get a good $4 pair of shoes." Well, he can yet, if he pays $17 for them. Rockefeller says love is a greater possession that riches. But with rents where they are, we don't know. One of the wonders of this age Is how William Jennings Bryan can get so optimistic on grape Juice. This is a country of resolutions, not revolutions.
Dinner Stories
He had just given a long explanation of his late homecoming. "I don't believe a word of it," declared his wife. "That's where you are wrong, my dear" he replied. "Several words of it arc true." For some months, an old man, through all the stress of weather, has been attending services in the Hanson Place Baptist church. Recently, the pastor, the Rev. Samuel Macauley Lindsay, the young Scotchman, greeted him and said he was glad to see him. "Why, I had not been in church for forty years until these last few months." "How did you happen to come here?" asked the minister. "Well, I have been a hard drinker all my life, and since prohibition, the only Scotch I can find in Brooklyn is here."

The After Effects of Pneumonia
This is No. 2 of a series of advertisements, prepared by a competent physician, explaining how certain diseases which attack the air passages such as Pneumonia, Influenza, Whooping Cough, Measles or even a long continued Cold often leave these organs in an inflamed, congested state, thus affording a favorable foothold for invading germs. And how Vick's VapoRub may be of value in this condition.

v . rA New York judge has handed down the ruling that love is insanity. If that is the case, it is time to sweep out the padded cells. The summer resort season is near. Back in the squab qr broiler days of our brilliant newspaper career we worked for a crusty editor who had no illusions. He cautioned us never to use the word "great." "The word 'great' doesn't mean anything," he paid. "It is a pale, anemic adjective that doesn't get anywhere. It's a fake word." During the past few years we have seen this word glibly attached to a lot of men, and we are now convinced that the old editor was right. "I don't want to be accused of hating myself," says the presidential ! possibility, "and I don't ever throw any bouquets at myself but look me over, !boys; look me over, that's all." The cable says George V. has gone .'in for ouija boarding. The only George V. wo know is George V. Hobart, and : well, we don't believe it, that's all. "Time ' was." said a pessimistic
. RELIEfiJIBlMR! It Soothes and Relieves Like a Mustard Plaster Without the Burn or Sting Musterole is a clean, white ointment, made with the oil of mustard. It does all the work of the old-fashioned mustard plaster does it better and does not blister. You do not have to bother with a cloth. You simply rub it on and usually the pain is gone ! Many doctors and nurses use Musterole and recommend it to their patients-. They will gladly tell you what relief it gives from sore throat, bronchitis, croup, stiff neck, asthma, neuralgia, congestion, pleurisy, rheuma tism, lumbago, pains and aches of the back or joints, sprains, sore muscles, bruises, chilblains, frosted feet, colds of the chest (it often prevents pneumonia). 30c and 60c jars; hospital size $2.50.
Pneumonia attacks the air cells of the lungs. An inflammation is set up and matter is thrown off which causes the air cells to solidify, thus preventing the natural flow of blood thru the lungs. This "backing up" of the blood causes the heart to pump harder, just as stepping on a hose increases the water pressure, which is the reason why, during this disease, the physician watches the overburdened heart so carefully. After recovery the lungs are filled with a mass of wreckage the debris of the battle which must be gotten rid of by a process known as resolution . Frequently , inflamed spots remain, congestion persists, cough hangs on, and the least exposure brings on a cold that is hard to get rid of. If neglected, such damaged air passages may easily develop serious disease of the lungs. Such cases should always continue under a physician's care and frequent examinations should be made to see that nature is
properly continuing the rebuilding process. Nightly applications of Vick's VapoRub will aid nature in this work. Because Vicks acts locally by stimulation thru the skin to draw out the inflammation, attract the blood away from tha congested spots and relieve the cough. In addition, the medicinal ingredients of Vicks are vaporized by the body heat. These vapors are breathed in all night long, thus bringing the medication to bear directly upon the inflamed areas. Vicks should be rubbed in over the throat and chest until the skin is red then spread on thickly and covered with hot flannel cloths. Leave the clothing loose around the neck and the bed clothes arranged in the form of a funnel so the vapors arising may be freely inhaled. If the cough is annoying, swallow a small bit of Vicks the size of a pea. Samples to new uses will be sent free on request to the Vick Chemical Company, 232 Broad Street, Greensboro, N. C.
