Safeguarding Our Oil' Supply

i. 3...

tnan that of any nation of the globe. We are

. consuming more oil than we produce. We have ( been drawing heavily on the oil output of Mexico, ; consuming three-fourths of the output of its t wells . ! ; T.CP.ur consumption is increasing rather than diminishing. The growth of the automobile industry has been so rapid that it is estimated that the; United States will use 800,000,000 barrels of oif-forits automobiles alone by 1925.

Vv'AVhile this consumption is annually increasing

V'e are doing nothing to assure an adequate supIpl.V for the future, says" an investigator for The

wuuwK, wno nnas tnat Great Britain is taking

rsyepsv that will give her the mastery of the oil situation of the world. :

; "Recently the British passed a law forbidding any foreigner to own a square foot of, oil land in any-British territory or even to own stock in any British oil concern." he says. "Yet Britons own oH land m every important oil-producing district of .the United States and are making every effort to increase their holdings. British interests today control three-quarters of the reserve oil territory of the world. The United States has no Sew big fields in sight, and it is estimated that all present oil-producing land in the United States will be practically exhausted in twenty years. England is helping to exhaust American oil through the development of her holdings in

is exhausted the sooner her great holdings of re-j serve' territory in other quarters of the world will make her complete master of the petroleum market. y "For more than ten years the Pearson inter

ests, which are now controlled by the British gov

ernment, have held great oil territories in Mexi

co through concessions In most of these oil

fields not so much as a post hole has been sunk,

although the Pearson interests have made con

siderable development on privately owned leases. Three years ago the Mexican government quite

properly decided that all holders of oil property in Mexico ought either to do a certain amount of developing or to pay taxes to the government.

On May 15, 1917, accordingly, the Mexican government put into effect a law which declared that the ultimate ownership of all oil discovered from that date on should be considered as resting with the Mexican nation, and that all concerns leasing oil-fields from then on should be required to pay to the government a rental of five pesos per hectare, or five per cent royalty on oil produced every year, and that when the royalty exceeded the rental as it would once real production was begun no rental should be paid. The majority of the foreign oil interests have not yet complied with this law. Instead, according to the statements of American oil men and Mexican government officials, they have been bringing to bear great pressure to produce American inter

vention in Mexico. "The men whom I have interviewed have two remedies to suggest. First, they say that unless Great Britain repeals her law which prevents Americans owning oil in British territory the American congress ought to pass a law preventing British citizens from owning oil in the United

States. Second, and this they consider more im

portant, they say that the American government ought to be aroused by popular demand, if possible, to the importance of protecting and faster-

ing legitimate American industrial expansion in

foreign countries, and particularly, in this connection, industrial expansion in the shape of American acquitisibn of oil-fields in foreign

Today's Talk George Matthew Adamt

TRY TO BE GLAD I supposB there is', a. reason for everything, including Uunhappiness. But I wish that a few -Treasons would go out of style so.t.at more folks could just be gladj ,-. ! Glad people live, three days at a time, and sometimes; a dozen. And a lot of them are hundreds of yearsold

while yet in their "teens," simply be

cause they have lived so much .into

what they have. , Try to be glad today. '

i Sort of talk things over with yourself, and see if you can't be .glad in

Bpite of yourself. For the gladder

you are. the gladder everybody else

Is. And then, after that, it works right back to you again the gladder other folks are, .the gladder you getl'v ! So make an extra effort to be glad, today. Lots of people would be glad to have another eye, or arm, or leg. Most of us have our full quota, and yet many of us fall off the glad wagon with great regularity. For one thing, let's be glad that we are living. And let's be glad that there is at least one who tliinks about us, and maybe loves us. And let's be elad

that we have the whole earth to walk around in, and that the scent ' of every flower is free to us, and that we have to pay nothing to attend the concerts of the birds. v y. 1 And when we get rather glad, let's be glad of that! For "Just being glad brings heaven here below. Looking for the glad things, in the love-light's glow; . Burdens will be lighter, life seem more complete, Looking for the glad thjngs, glad things we will meet."

She gets just so far just a bit below

par, And in that position she sticks,

And though she may try, she cannot

tell why Just outside the circle she sticks. "Is there a 'weaker sex'," asks a

learned New England professor. If the professor is looking for the light, he

shall have it. Yes, there is a weaker

sex. If he is a married man he should

know which sex it is. Probably the

only reason he is in doubt is the fact

that he is a bachelor.

"Is your love Uue?" the girl asked. "As true," the man answered. In low

passionate tones, "as the delicate flush

on your cheek."

,K)h er ah!" the girl stammered,

hurriedly; "isn't the er doesn't the

band play nicely?"

"You've a wonderful memory, my man!" "No, sir," said the waiter, meekly, I just looks at the tablecloth!" i A girl and a man sat under a palm

Good Evening By Roy K. Moulton

Word eomes from Washington, D. C. of a very remarkable game of poker. One dealing-resulted in three royal tlushes. It was claimed that, in this manner, 411 records in the history of the game were broken. Personally, we don't know very much about poker and, we may add tnat we - don't believe anybody else does, but we do not think the game at Washington established any record at all. A short time ago we witnessed cnother friendly game which was more remarkable than the Washington contest. This game was held on Long Island and the gentlemen engaged were nil friends. It was not in any respect a professional game. There was a show-down of three hands. The first man had three aces and a pair of kings, the second man had three. aces and a pair of queens and the third man had three aces and a pair of jacks. The first man claimed the money,, and it was given him by mutual consent. It was a gentlemen's , game, of course, and nobody was unkind enough to call attention to the fact that there were nine aces in the deck. It was sort of a strange thing, however, and we doubt if such a deal ever happened before or since. MRS. NEWRICH. TP HE production of crude oil, is . in itself, a highly specialized business. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) recognizes this fact, and leaves to others the drilling of wells, the operation of pipe lines, and the other activities incident to the production, storage and transportation of petroleum. It buys its requirements of crude oil on the open market and pays the market price. The business which engages the attention of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) is the manufacture, distribution, and sale of the products of petroleum. The Company goes into the oil fields and buys the Crude it wants from whoever has it for sale. In this way the Company is able to select with care the raw material it uses, and is not hampered in its endeavor to render greater service by being tempted to use Crude which is not exactly suited to its needs. By devotingall of its time to the business of refining and marketing, the Company is able to fulfill its obligation to the public by supplying petroleum products of the highest known standards to maintain at all times a uniformity of quality- and to manufacture in such volume and in such variety of forms as to enable it to sell these products at a low price.
