S. A. L. IS ORGANIZED AS 6-CLUB LEAGUE; TO ELECT OFFICERS

Saturday afternoon baseball for the coming season became an assured fact Thursday night, as a result of a meeting held In Vigran's store. Six teams signed for the league and it is planned to open the season on May 1. The six teams are: Starr, Wayne Works. Pennsy, Jenkins-Vulcan, Swayne-Rob-inson and Natco. Another meeting is to be held next week for the drafting of a constitution and the election of officers. Considerable trouble has existed in other seasons on account of a player quitting one factory to work at another so as to play baseball. Selection of suitable diamonds -will also be decided upon at next week's meeting. Class B baseball is assured, and for this reason S. A. L. ball can only be played at Exhibition Park when Richmond is away from home. However, the Twenty-second street iTtlovOTYinrMla viTI ha nnt into first-ClaSS

condition this year; Reid Field at Earlham may be used. The splendid diamonds at Easthaven can be had for he asking but S. A. L. players have dislike to going that far to play (ball. j The league as now lined-up includes 'several important manufactories in 'Richmond. The A. S. ML is the only big one out. The Seeders have something up their sleeve as baseball is to "be played at the factory this summer, bat officials will not put S. A. L. boosters wise.

Members of the A. S. M. bowling league, Phil and Charley Twigg and all Twigg's pin boys, are to be present at a dinner and entertainment given ty the league in the I. O. O. F. hall at 6:30 p. m., Monday. The wives and sweethearts of the "bowlers will also .be present Several interesting features are being planned and the dinner will be cooked and served by the ladles of the G. A. R. The newly organized six-piece A. S. M. orchestra .will furnish music. No other attraction except church was in Richmond Thursday night and the Cleaners of the City Bowling league had seven men scrambling for places. The abundance of playing material availed but little, however, as the Laddies rolled two better scores. All games were by close majorities.

Captain Joe Smedinghot'f had a complete Kaysee Number One team and it rolled the best scores made by Kaytee teams for more than two months. It availed but little, as the Cokes were ftlso in good form and rolled two better games. The Knights won the last by a 137-pin majority. High, score for the evening was captured by Art Kins; with 214. Fosler came in for average with 198. The scores: WILSON CLEANERS Player 1st 2nd 3rd Tl. MACON, Ga., April 2. Hughie Jennings, leader of the slugging Tigers, has been handicapped for years by the lack of competent hurlers. Everybody knows that. So, when Joe Doaks, rookie pitcher from the wilds of Tennessee, began unlimbering in the pitcher's box the other day after two weeks of practice, Jennings and his regulars were just about paralyzed with joy. For this lad, who had left a steady job as clerk in the grocery store of Schneer and Brodie at Bleeker's Corners, to try his skill, had a hop on his fast ball that made Ty Cobb, Eabby Veach, Ira Fla'gstead, Chick Shorten and the other slugging brothers look foolish. When the kid kept the whole crew mystified for days Jennings said: "He's there." The Tiger leader quizzed the kid about obeying the new rules regarding freak deliveries and the kid replied: "They can't catch Joe Doaks. 1 don't apply no foreign substance dope to the ball and I don't rub it on my clothes or nothin like that. There

I ain't no rules can catch me."

Jennings quizzed the lad no further. But the secret leaked out the other night when Joe got too much milk chocolate in him together with a couple of grape fruit and a few sandwiches his usual midnight lunch. Joe, in his idle moments in the store had captured and trained a dozen ilies to do his bidding. When Joe took

hold of a baseball and called to the troupe they climbed out of his uniform pocket and sat in a row on the seam of the ball, They hung there like glue while Joe wound up and heaved the ball, Their presence had the the same effect as roughing up a seam barred by the rules. This platoon of flies formed a "wing" and, causing added resistence to the air, made the ball "hop." Then, Just as the ball came within range of the befuddled batter the flies let go and went back to Joe's pocket. It looks like a big year for the Tigers. The umps will have no way of telling when the flies are riding on the balL Seeing the flies, they'll have no way of proving that they are the ones Joe brought along. Joe can deny he talked in his sleep.

Auuut me oniy imng ror tne oppo-

sition to do is to step up toward the

pitcher's box some day and knock that platoon of flies for a home run before they leave.

- The Garfield varsity basketball five defeated a representative Richmond high school team, 21 to 7 in the Garfield Gym, Thursday afternoon. The game was slow and Garfield could have run the score higher. The game preceeded the basketball tourney. The first surprise of the tourney came when the Kesslers defeated the champion Harlans, 13 to nine. The Harlins won the larger boy's ieague championship and were given the edge over the Kessler's. Thomas's quintet defeated Norton's five, four to three.

Quaker Track Aspirants Injured; Baseball Men Lay

Off Until Rains Cease Despite the great showing being made by Earlham Freshman track candidates, Quaker prospects are not as bright as a week ago. Ray Johnson, counted upon as a sure point-

getter in the weight events, slipped t on the cinder track Thursday and j

tore a tendon in his leg. He is only able to navigate by aid of a crutch. Charles Ivey, star high jumper and I distance runner and also captain of ;

the track team, accidentally ran a , knife into his leg and has been unable

to practice ror several aays. inese injuries may keep this pair out of the first track meet. Al. Carter, holder of the high school quarter-mile record for New York, has shown enough promise in workouts to lead Coach Mowe to predict great things for him. Dalton, another Freshie and winner of the high school mile event last year, is showing great promise in the distance runs. Two other Freshmen look good in track and one is running Carey a race for pole vault honors. The Quaker baseball cadidates were

allowed a layoff Thursday afternoon. The squad has been worked at top speed for over two weeks and Mowe feels that a short rest will prove of benefit. If cold, damp weather prevails Friday afternoon, the squad win be given another layoff. WILLIAMSBURG BASKETBALL TEAM IS ENTERTAINED Members of the Williamsburg bas-
