' Goodrich, exofficio chairman of the State Historical commission, ha 9 suggested that one copy of the Gold Star memorial volumes which the commission has decided to publish, be given free to every family which lost a son or daughter in the world war. The memorial volumes will contain complete record of 3,246 men and 14 nurses from Indiana who paid the supreme sacrifice. Complete war history records from more than half the counties of the ttate have already been sent In, and others will be compiled within the next few weeks. Director John W. Oliver said Thursday. Will Issue Other Volumes. The commission has also approved the early publication of two other volumes, one of the five Liberty loan drives, which Waiter S. Greenough will compile; the other, a. history of the state council of defense and state conscription board. Edward Warfel. former Richmond man, who acted as publicity agent for the state council of defense, is compiling the history of that organization, and Major Robert S. btate conscription agent, is preparing staee conscription agent. Professor Harlow Lindley, of Earlham college, an active member of the commission, attended the meeting last Friday in Indianapolis, when it wa3 officially decided to Immediately publish tho Gold Star volumes.

Richardson Given Watch On Thirty-Third Birthday C. It. Richardson, Richmond colored attorney and representative of the state Republican committee, was given Wednesday, his 33rd birthday, a handsome gold watch as a memento for his services rendered Richmond. Among the contributors " for the watch were Edmund C. Wasmuth, state Republican chairman: Mayor Zimmerman, A. C. Lindemuth and a number of other prominent citizens. Mayor Zimmerman gave the presentation 6peech. Members of the presentation committee included Mayor Zimmerman, Frank T. Strayer, A. C. Lindemuth, Leon R. Harris, the originator of the plan, Mr. Edwards and Mr. Clark.

American Legion

The overwhelming majority of exservice men feel strongly that this government owes an obligation to all persons who were handicapped either bodily or financially because of military or naval service during the recent war. The American Legion, representing over one million ex-service men an'. women spoke very plainly on thi3 point at its national convention last November.

Although this obligation to the disabled man, handicapped bodily, was universally acknowledged, it required a special meeting of the American Legion in Washington during December, over a year after the signing of the armistice, to secure satisfactory action by congress for the disabled man to tie end that he would no longer be an object of private charity but could live on his increased compensation allowance. The average man has been out of the service over one year, and outside of the $60, which hardly bought him a civilian outfit. He has received no aid from his government in overcoming the handicap incidental to his service. In accordance with resolutions passed at the national convention of tho American Legion, its national beneficial legislation committee is now ready to submit recommendations for legislation covering four features as follows: 1. Land settlement, covering farms in all states and not confined to a few states. 2. Home aid to encourage purchase of homes in either country or city. 3. Vocational training for all exservice persons desiring it. 4. Adjustment of compensation or final adjustment of extra back pay based on length of service for those not desiring to avail themselves of any of the previous three features. The ex-service person to bo given

The American Legion asks for no bonus, wants no bonus, that sounds too much like a gift or a present from the government. It merely asks the government to assist the ex-service man in overcoming some of the financial disadvantages Incidental to his military or naval service.

County Offices Collect

$3,628,25, Daring Quarter The sum of $3,628.25 in fees was bandied by the county clerk, county recorder and county auditor, during the first quarter of the year ending March 31. 1920, reports filed with the auditor Wednesday show. The county recorder had one of the busiest quarters in history, when 686 deeds, 368 mortgages, and 321 chattel mortgages were filed. During the same quarter in 1919, 440 deeds, 294 mortgages and 95 chattel mortgages were recorded. Fees amounting to $1,778.15 were received in the recorder's office. The fees from the clerks' office totaled $1,657.10, and $175 was collected in the auditor's office.
