Rush of Farmer Bovs Citvward Decreases Production Apropos of the increase in the urban population and the consequent decrease in the production of our farms is a statement recently made by Louis J. Taber, master of the Ohio State

Grange, who asserted "it is entirely possible that

the American people can starve to death on pres ent high wages and short hours." Referring to the returns of the census bu

veau, Mr. Taber said hundreds of agricultural sections, on which the country depends for food,

have less population in 1920 than in 1910.

"During the last few years many thousands

of country boys have left farms and have gone

to the city factories, attracted by high wages and

short hours. They've left .their fathers to get

along with the farm work as best they can. The

result is going to be disastrous if something is not done." Mr. Taber, on a train from Orville to Axv.on, recently, interviewed 21 boys on the train going to Akron to work in the rubber factories. Nine

teen were from farms in Ohio, Kentucky. West; Virginia and Tennessee, and 15 of the 19 said

they were after a "short day and big money in the factories", he said.

This trend explains why food prices are high

and why there is little prospect of them coming

down so long as the farm boys desert the farmside for the city. Mr. Taber is a successful farmer. His conclusion on the prospect of a material reduction in food prices follows: "How can they when shortage of farm labor means decreased production all over the United States this year? Prices are bound to be high until farmers can produce more than the demand." Proof of his assertion is to be found in the situation in Ohio where farm production in 1920 will show a falling off of about 22 per cent, as compared with two years ago; where there is 20 rcr cent less wheat in the ground than last year ;

where there is hardly a farmer who has sufficient

help.

Mr. Tabor exonerates the farmer from the

charge of profiteering by showing that the farmer gets only 88 cents for the green hide that

goes into a pair of shoes ; $7 for the wool in a $75 suit; nine-tenths of 1 per cent for wheat in a 15-

cent package of wheat.

Good Evening By Roy K. Moulton

Employes of the federal reserve bank in Chicago have been forbidden to marry if they earn less than $125 a month. And, from a strictly practical standpoint, we would like to say that there are times in every man's married life when as much as $126 a month does not seem entirely adequate. M. Carpentier refuses to talk about his business of pugilism, but alks to the reporters only about his bride. "Well, well!" remarks the Old Pessimist, "how long did you say this boy had been. married?" A Boston physician informs the world that in another century "the senseless and poisonous custom of kissing will be regarded as barbarous." The doctor is wise. He seta the time so far ahead that he won't miss anything, personally. The labor department at Washington says the cost of living went down elx-tenths of one per cent in Washington. We must have been out at lunch or In conference when it did that, for we never heard of it. Bebe telegraphs us that Mr. Butter runs a butter market on Third avenue. The eternal fitness of things i3 hitting here and there. Prohibition has taken hold to the extent that a lot of men who could never do it before, can now walk right into a circulating library without fear of becoming befuddled. Gambling constantly on peanut and gum vending machines has kept many a man from becoming a millionaire. The ladies are wiser. They use the vending machine only for the mirror it contains, and let the men pay for the upkeep. Here and there are certain misanthropes who state that they do not always believe what they read in the papers. would help to settle them and to en

lighten your readers.

How soon can a landlord cause

renters to move and how would he

have to proceed? That depends on

the kind of agreement between the

landlord and tenant.

1. If there is no agreement about

the duration of the tenancy at the time of the occupancy of the premises.

the tenant is a yearly tenant, enutled to a three-months' written notice prior to the expiration of the year, either to vacate or to pay more rent. For instance, if a landlord sayB nothing

or is silent about the length of time a tenant may occupy a house, or

should say, "You can keep it as long

as you want to," then the tenant be

comes a yearly tenant and is entitled

to three-months' written notice prior

to the expiration of his year and can

not be required to move, or have his rent raised, untU the end of the first

year or his tenancy. 2. If there is an agreement at the time of the occupancy of the premies that the tenant is to be considered a monthly renter, then all that is

required is a full rental month's written notice. For example, if a landed states at the time he rents the iroperty that he may want to sell or take possession of it at any time, the enant is then a monthly tenant and s only entitled to a full rental month's written notice to vacate. How can a landlord raise rents and !iow would ho have to proceed, and an he increase rents to any amount 'ie wishes? The same rule applies as to the foregoing. If he has given roper notice he can raise rents any amount he wishes. If the tenant reuses to pay, the landlord must give Mm notice to vacate. Does the law give renters of longer han one yehr any rights that ones of

lees time do not have? This dCDenda

stopped Harold with a sharp pinch of his leg under the table. When the guests had all gone Har

wanted to tell you, mamma, was mat I'd lost my gum in your chop suey, but you wouldn't let me finish."
