OLD-TIMERS RECALL WAYNE TOLL ROADS; ALL GONE IN STATE
With the purchase of the old Corydon turnpike, in, Floyd county, by the state, the last toll road in existence in Indiana has gone. Old timers in Richmond well remember the toll gates, and 'what schemes used to be worked by the youthful "Beau Brummels" of the town to beat the toll gate keeper. However, most of these failed to work, much to the distress of the ones trying to put them over. Seven turnpikes entered Richmond and tolL stations were maintained at practically every cross road on the turnpikes of any importance. Although Uie toll keepers had fewer friends t'aan any other professional men, they had a canny way of always extracting their tolls. Long Pole Guarded Road. The toll gate guarded the turnpike by a long pole which stretched c.ear across the road, keeping the traveler back until he had paid. Thepoles, as a rule, were kept down, especially at tight, the keepers taking no chances n being taken advantage of by." the unscrupulous or venturesome. A very fair rate of toll was charged on all the turnpikes in Wayne county, earlier settlers say. The tolls charged by the keepers follow: Far every score of sheep and hogs. f ceitts; for every score of cattle, 12 cent 8; one horse and rider, 4 cents; one led or driven horse, 3 cents; one sleigh ot sled, pulled by one horse or a pair of cents; one dearborn, sulky or chaise, pulled by one horse, G cents; one chariot, coach, coachee, etage, wagon, phaeton and chaise with four wheels and pulled by two horses. 12 cents; for any of those carriages pulled xby four horses, 18 cents; pleasure carriages, 12 and 18 cents, to be
determined by the number of wheels and horses ; cart - or wagon, whose j wheels exceeded 2 inches in breadth and did not exceed four inches, pulled by one horse or pair of oxen, 5 cents; horse or pair of oxen pulling cart or wagon whose wheels did not exceed five inches, 3 cents, and horse or pair of oxen drawing cart or wagon whose wheels exceeded six inches and did not exceed 8 inches, 2 cents. One horse or pair of oxen drawing a cart or wagon whose wheels exceeded 8 Inches in breadth were allowed to pass free. Many Went ToUFree. No tolls were ever collected from any person or persons passing from one part of his farm to another, or to and from a mill, or to and from a place of worship, funeral, militia training, or from any student or child going from any school or seminary of learning, or from persons or witnesses going to and returning from courts, or from any wagon or carriage laden with the property of the government. The seven turnpike roads, on which tolls were charged, entering and leaving Ricchmond, were as follows: Richmond to Boston; Richmond to Newport (Fountain City); Richmond to New Paris, -Ohio; Richmond to Hillsboro; Richmond to Lick Creek; Richmond to Williamsburg.
