Freshle candidates . aro .puL- ." ting up a very impressive brand of ball. Further progress in the finer points of inflelding was doled by the Quaker mentor Wednesday afternoon, and the Freshies seemed to profit most. C; Champion Teams Yet to Try for the Marks PEORIA. 111., March' 25. With the J920 American bowling congress reaching the half-way mark at the close vt play here tonight, officials today ' estimated the scores as a whole will be the highest in history. Three records already have gone by the boards and with three A. B. C. champions and many sectional and state title , holders yet to roll the best scores of the tournament may come In the closing weeks. , Industrial teams from Akron, O., attacked in the five-men events today. Teams from Denver, St. Paul, Newark, Chicago, Milwaukee, Huntington, W. Va., and Madison, Wis., also were on the drives. The entire schedule this morning ' was taken over by Kenosha, Wis. bowlers rolling in the individuals and two-men classes. Man of them rolled high scores in their team events last night and changes were expected -today in the all-event standing.
' Sophomores Maul Seniors in Earlham GirW Games ffs -' The Sophomores handed the Seniors an awful walloping in the second round f the Earlham girls inter-class basketball games Wednesday afternoon, the final score being 21 to 0. This Is the worst treatment ever accorded a team of the high and mighty Senior class. The Juniors and Freshies locked horns and after n hard game the score showed the Juniors on the long end of a 13 to 9 score. A regular battle is promised Friday afternoon when the strong Juniors . and Sophs clash. The Sophs came off winner in the last engagement and the Juniors are out for revenge. The Freshies aro preparing to atone for past insults accorded them, by giving the Seniors the same treatment Friday as the Sophs gave Wednesday.

SATURDAY ' Morning Afternoon Night COLISEUM
Chick Shorten, one of the members. of the hard-hitting quartet of Tiger outfielders, stands out as one of tho greatest " place hitters in the great national game. His ability to place 'em "where the fielders ain't," coupled with his ability to hit 'em at a .315 gait (his last year's speed) makes him as valuable a man to the Tigers aa are either Veach or Flagstead,al though he hit a 'bit below them. Old-timers will tell fbu Shorten is a second Willie Keeler. Sounds good. Others will compare him with Jess Burkett This may be nearer correct, for Shorten had an opportunity to learn Burkett'a style and acquire the "inside dope" on place hitting that Burkett could give him. Shorten at one time played for Burkett at Worcester, Mass., and. teammates (including Steve O'Neill of the Indians) tell us that Jess speu hours a day coaching Chick. ' Burkett's work bore fruit. Chick's batting average jumped from .285 to .345 while with Jess. Shorten first broke into print as a member of the famous Mlnooka (Pa.) Blues, an amateur team that sparkled year&f ago due to the brilliant playing Of O'Neill, McNally. Festu3 Higgias and some, ether boys who broke into the, uiajurs .on the reps they acquired with the Catholic Temperance league club. Chick was born in Scranton, Pa., in 1892. Burkett grabbed him from the Mlnooka club in 1913 and two years later ,the Red Sox took him south and then turned him over to the Providence club. He was recalled in the spring of 191T turned back for a few weeks and then recalled again in time to break into the. world's series. He made his series debut In the third game, getting three hits' in four trips to the plate, driving in one of the two runs in the sixth inning rally which threatened to destroy Brooklyn's, four-run lead. Shorten's single in the fifth and final game helped put the contest and series on ice He was with the Red Sox until January 17, 1919, when the TigeAs got him in the cracker-box swap arranged by Detroit Washington and Boston, the Sox giving Shorten, Pitcher Love and Ainsmith for Oscar Vitt, after acquiring Alnsmith and Dumont for Janvrin and some cash. Reds Beaten by Wildness of Ring; Score is 6 to 3 TAMPA, Fla., March 25. The wildness of Jimmy Ring and the effective pitching of the two big Washington right-handers, Eric Erickson and Jim Shaw, enabled the Senators to reverse the count on the Reds Wednesday, and the champions were beaten 6 to 3 in the second game of the long series. Ring, who has had no practice while the club has been on this jaunt to the west coast, was painfully untamed, and all of the senatorial tallies were due to his ignorance of the plate's location. The Reds outhit the enemy, but were stopped in the pinches by Erickson and Shaw, while the Griffmen always had easy walkers on the sacks, to be driven around when a base hit made its tardy appearance. It was the first really poor exhibition given by Pat Moran'a star right-hander this spring, and was excusable on account of the absence of any practice hours while the club is touring the state of Florida.
