The Farm and Hie Farmer By William R. 8anborn
1 "
"It la doubtful If we shall raise as many hogs this year as we did In 1919," said Frank M. Campbell, of College Corner. "In the first place some farmers wintered fewer -brood sows, the outlook not being overly encouraging. "There were a few losses of early pigs, perhaps, but these were not large enough to affect the situation, for the spring pig crop is still largely to come. Don't believe there is a general tendency to limit pork production around here, but at that feel sure that the entire country will market many less hogs than last year. Hogs must be pretty closely sold out In most sections. "As to the future of prices, that isn't for ma to Judge, although every man has a guess coming. Personally, I am hoping for better price along in the summer; believe they are due, but every feeder-4s at sea, has no chart to steer by. "Hardly think we can reasonably hope for any such figures as have been paid for hogs, but in view of the cost of feeds and other circumstances, we should certainly get more money for both hogs and cattle. As to spring planting I judge that our farmers will till all the land they can handle, though some may have to reduce their acreages for lack of help, and If so, this will develop later." An Undecided Feeder. "Having bought a thousand bushels of corn on top of my own supply I am in doubt right now as to the best use to make of it feed it or eell it," said Isaiah Fricker of Dublin. "I wintered more sows than I did last year; have a few spring pigs and a lot more to come, and had intended to buy shoats as usual. So far haven't bought any feeders, neither in the hog or cattle line, and may not do so. "Have a small bunch of cattle of mv
own raising, but the outlook for cattle
men isn t a bit encouraging. No farmer knows where he stands in this feeding business; lie has nothing on earth to tie to; not a thing to bank on, as I see it, and all we farmers are in tho 6ame boat." "As to our spring planting I shall put in the usual acreage, and so, too, will most of my neighbors. You see the farmers up this way hire comparatively few men and manage to do
their own
suits them
There were very few February pigs around here, these come along mostly in late March and April In this section, the cold weather crop not being in favor. The losses of early pigs was not large." Complains of Small Broods. "Will we raise the usual number of hogs this year? Well, our trouble is in getting the pigs to raise," said Charles Steck of Lewisburg, O. On top of getting the smallest litters ever known, speaking in averages, is the fact that some of these youngsters don't pull through, one neighbor telling me today that he has so far lost all but four out of a bunch of 35 late arrivals. "No one seems able to account for such small farrowings; they only know it to be a fact. No, I don't personally
know that there has been heavy losses of pigs, generally speaking, but soc3 farmers tell discouraging stories. Can't say that I shall feed as heavy as I commonly do, but aim to feed from 50 to 100 tor market. Farmers are preparing to take care of their regular rotations and we shall all be busy soon if the weather continues favorable. There is some anxiety now as to how the wheat will show up within the next few days.

WASHINGTON.
At the Motion Picture Day and
carnival of outdoor sports held in Los Angeles recently, for the benefit of the Actors' Fund of America, Clara Kimball Young was awarded the big silver trophy cup as the queen of beauty. Miss Young was in competition v ith practically all of the motion picture stars of Southern California, and the award to her was both instant and popular. Other great features of the day were automobile races driven by famous motion picture stars, in which Tom Mix won the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship under the rules of the Automobile Association of America, setting up a record of considerably better than a mile a minute over a twenty-five mile course at the Ascot Speedway, while Donald Crisp, Lambert Hillyer and many others carried off trophy cups. Miss Young is in Southern California working on her next big production, having just finished "Eyes of Youth," which is to be released in October, and which it is believed will
be the best offering of her career. "Eyes of Youth" is playing the last times today at the Washington. MURRAY. In discussing "Tiger Rose", Willard Mack's greatest and latest effort, David Belasco, who personally owns and will present this charming play here Wednesday night, March 31, and who has spent thousands of dollars in staging the production, says: "To me there is no form of production so absorbing as a ereat bie throb-

What is true of me is in the main true of him, high or low, rich or poor, we enjoy the depictation of familiar emotions that is what the whole world loves, melodrama. It is a form of play that is truest to the fact of existence and therefore the form that finds the most universal understanding and appreciation. Stage history proves this, beyond a shadow of a doubt, for plays come and plays go, but, like Tennyson's brook, melodrama goes on forever. We have had cycles of all sorts of plays. There was a vogue some years back for problem plays, then came a perfect deluge of sex plays nauseous discussions of the
Farm Federation
The executive board of the Indiana association of farmers' federations has decided to increase-the scope of its legislative committee by having four men from each district and four from each county, in addition to the central committee, composed of five members. , The district and county members will be composed of two from each party, one a man and one a woman. Questionaires are to be sent to all leading candidates of both leading parties, asking their views on matters of interest to farmers. These questionnaires are to be drafted by the central committee and sent out to the various county and district committee members, who, in turn, will see that they are turned over to the office seekers, including aspirants for scats in the next state legislature.
