Every Littbe Bit Helps The time is not far distant when the thrifty head of the family and his children will be busy in the home garden preparing the soil for the seeds that later will mature into vegetables for summer consumption and winter storage. The spirit of spring is asserting itself mightily. A few days of sunlight will warm the soil

and wake the earth from its hibernal slumber. Spears of green presently will be peeping out of earth's crust and before many days its surface will be carpeted with new vegetation. Signs of spring are everywhere. Every grocery store has its display of seeds. They remind us that the home garden awaits its annual tilling. They remind us emphatically that the world-is still crying or food, that thousands perished this winter In Europe, and that the yield of countless

fields will be required to satisfy the hunger of millions. If the war taught us the value of home gardens, the reconstruction period, with its high prices here and its starvation abroad, imperatively drives home the lesson of cultivating them anew. The home garden is not a whim, a silly

notion, a figment of the fancy, the outcrop of a theorist's foolish fallacy, but a practical and sensible wav to produce .foodstuffs to offset

want. The war gardens saved the nation thous

ands of dollars. The gardens of the reconstruc

tion period will be equally as valuable and equally

as potent in diminishing the demand for food. The world is crying for bread to eat. If the home

gardens keep thousands out of the market, the surplus will tend to lower prices and create the

surplus which will feed the thousands who have

been unable to grow crops.

Richmond held an enviable position a few years ago for its record as a city of home gardens. Few, if any city in the United States, could boast so many gardens in comparison with its

population and the number of its school children. This record can be approached this year, if the thrifty family head cultivates his back yard and a vacant lot. Every idle spot in Richmond should be made to produce. If the world needs accelerated production, Richmond may do its share in no small way by putting in gardens by the hundreds. War gardens, responding to in

telligent cultivation, carefully cared for during the summer months, will be a commendable response to the demand for production.
