LUTHERANS HEAR OF . POLISH GRATITUDE

Richmond Lutherans were interestfed Tuesday In the report of Lutheran relief work In Europe sent from Warsaw hy Dr. J. A. Morehead, of Fort Wayne. . The Lutheran churches of Richmond have sent more than a thousand pounds of clothing to the Polish and German relief headquarters. In a drive which closed two weeks ago St. John's Lutheran church obtained 270 pounds of clothing and $535 for German relief. Dr. Morehead's report contains the following on conditions in Poland: "The need of the clothing in Poland among our Lutheran people is well nigh desperate. It has been a long wait for them since the first news

came that such supplies would be collected and sent. The piling up of shipments in Dantzig. which was too bad, was due partly to shortage of

cars and partly for formalities in con

nection with a fire on the OzauKte. The first two carloads were unleaded here in Warsaw today. Two more cars, shipped from Dantzig February 17, should arrive tomorrow. I have , succeeded in getting all our supplies ; in duty free and am very hopeful that ! we may be allowed transportation free from Dantzig by the Polish government. Get Free Transportation. The allied railway commission is

setting a good example by giving me free transportation on their courier car to and from Dantzig. But the

dray age and other distribution expenses will be considerable and of course I shall have to provide for them and the replacement of 63,000

marks from council funds. ' - The Ozaukee, Kosciusko, Sydfold and Shortsville have arrived in Dantzig. The Taiyu Maru is expected soon. "Although these supplies unfortunately arrived in Poland late in the winter, they are here by no means too late to be of very real and very great service. The joy and gratitude of the people, many if whom are in tattered remnants of old clothing, or are literally naked, is most touching. Church officials here say that this great gift of the Lutherans of Ameri

ca will quicken the faith of their people and bind them more strongly to our church. Hence this clothing campaign has significance far beyond ' Humanitarian relief, as important as that is in the circumstances."

KICKERS TO COST LESS. NEW YORK, March 23. Prices of standard shoes will be reduced during the spring and summer, John J. Slater, president of the Retail Shoe Dealers' association, announced Monday in a communication to Arthur Williams, federal food administrator. Retailers at a recent meeting decided to

be content with a smaller margin of profit, Mr. Slater said. Reductions, however, will not apply to "all kinds of fancy and ultra-fashionable footwear." Ttfe action of the retail shoe dealers, Mr. Williams said, probably pressaged the beginning of a general narrowing of profit margins in other wearing apparel.
