LABOR'S GUNS ARE TURNED ON CUMMINS

(By Associated Press) WASHINGTON. March 23 Senator Cummins, Republican of Iowa, is one of the members of congress organized labor will attempt to defeat in November, according to I E. Sheppard, act

ing president of the Order of Railway Conductors, who is in Washington today attending the railroad wage conference. Senator Cumminav was the author of the anti-strike provision of the railroad, which was thrown out in conference. Mr. Sheppard indicated that union officials were carefully studying the record of every member of congress with respect to his stand on this provision and other labor matters, with a view to opposing in the elections those regarded as inimical to organized labor. The headquarters of the railway conductors it at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and it is said that this union will organize the fight against Senator Cummins. Mr. Sheppard said, however, that union labor had not yet decided on a

candidate to oppose Senator Cummins, whose term will expire next

March.

Turn That Vacant Lot Into A Producing Garden! Vacant city lots would not be of much value for growing corn or wheat, but these valuable pieces of dirt arc often just the place for growing a good vegetable garden. Often the Boil is rough and covered with Btones and all sorts of waste materials, but most people who live in

cities and towns do not get enough outdoor exercise anyway, and the labor neceseary to clean off the trash and pile the stones to one side will do them good. Some of the best home gardens have

been grown on vacant Jots that were not much more than a stone pile to

begin with. In one case enough old

foundation stones were removed to

build a wall along the two exposed

sides of the lot. The soil was then leveled and a few small loads of manure spaded into it. - The garden was planted while neighboring apartment-house dwellers looked on from their windows, doubt written on every face, but the garden grew and flourished, and many were the smiles of appreciation of the good thing3 that were handed them by the owner of the garden. If the land is not shaded too great a part of the time, almost any vacant lot can be turned into a food garden, but it is often necessary, pretty nearly, to "make" the soil. Free booklets that tell how to garden will be sent on application to the United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C. 1 GAS PRODUCER OF CONCRETE Owing to the high price and scarcity of steel during the war, a gas company in Syracuse found it necessary to build the shells of a 200-horse power gas producer and scrubber out of concrete staves. The shells are eight feet in diametpr and the staves meas

ure 24 by 10 by 2 Inches. They are connected by tongue and groove Joints. !

Between the concrete and the lire

brick lining there is ' a three-inch space filled with a heat resisting material.

"WHITE COLLAR WORKERS AVOID WEDDED STATE

NEWARK, N. J. Clercial workers t and "white collar" men in general are not getting married these days, ac-; cording to City Clerk Egan, in charge of the marriage bureau. The propor-1 tion is about one out of a hundred ) licenses granted. Of the last 20 applicants for licenses not one was a

clerk. This showed the need of the "middle class" for an increase In income, Egan believes.

The Cold That

Hangs On

This is No. 5 of a scries of advertisements, prepared by a competent physician, explaining how certain diseases which attack the air passages such as Pneumonia, Influenza, Whooping Cough, Measles or even a long continued Cold often leave these organs in an inflamed, congested state, thus affording a favorable foothold for invading germs. And how.Vick's VapoRub may be of value in this condition.

The Theatres

WASHINGTON Any time that Clara Kimball Young requires children for a scene in one of her productions, the supply is always tenfold greater than the demand. The secret of this is that Miss Young is one of the most delightful storytellers in the business and the children dote upon the wonderful fairy stories with which Miss Young regales them between scenes. During the filming of "Eyes of Youth," in which a number of children were used in the school room scene, Miss Young made it a daily habit to entertain the children with stories during the noon hour, and her audience was always augmented by at least a score or more children from

the neighboring school who gave up their lunch hour to be with Miss Young. Miss Young Is starring In "Eyes of Youth" at the Washington theatre. MURRETTE

It is a story of New York life and takes in the life of the big city in various phases. As usual, William Fox has surrounded the star with an excellent and well-

balanced supporting cast. MURRAY "The method by which a woman can decide on the husband she wants, without his knowledge, and work to make

A cold is simply an inflammay tion of some part of the air passages throat, larynx or bronchial tubes just like a sore is an inflammation of the skin. A long continued cold means constant inflammation and this constant inflammation frequently weakens ' the air passages so that they become an easy point of attack for invading germs of more serious , diseases . A ' cold that hangs on," therefore, is simply nature's "red flag" " indicating that" there is " trouble below ," and this warning should never be neglected. Nightly applications of Vick's VapoRub will aid nature to clear up that inflammation. Because r Vicks acts locally by stimulation thru the skin to draw out the 'inflammation, attract the blood away from the congested spots

and relieve the cough. In addi tion, the medicinal ingredient3 of Vicks are vaporized by the body heat. These vapors are breathed in all night long, thus bringing the medication to bear directly upon the inflamed areas Vicks should be rubbed in over the throat and chest until the skin is red then spread on thickly and covered" with hot flannel cloths. Leave the clothing loose around the neck and the bed clothes arranged in the form of a funnel so the vapors arising may be freely inhaled. If the cough is annoying, swallow a small bit of Vicks the size of a pea . Samples to new users will be sent free on request to The Vick Chemical Company", 235 Broad, Street, Greensboro, N. C.
