The Diary of an Engaged Girl By Phyflls Phillips
Aunt Cecilia is going to marry Jetfry some time in the fall. She told me bo last night, after 1 came home from dinner with Jack and Bhe (suggested that there be a doable wedding In the family! Then Ehe told me all about Jeffry, and how he had never stopped Iotlng her In twelve years, and seemed to be the happiest man In the world, now that they had met again, and everything was settled. They are going to live right in New York for a while and I Just know how excited they both are. The she showed me her hope chest . begun so many years ago. Such lovely gossamer things as Aunt Cecilia had made for herself, such exquisite handwork on most of the under-gar-ments. It made me blush at the
thought of how mother and I had been
seen driving around from shop to chop for the past three weeks, buying ready-made things.
"Llndsey, darling," she explained.
"there's a dream hidden away in every
bow-knot of ribbon, and in every
ruffle of lace, and now each one is to come true." She actually hugged some of the prettiest chemises, and
giggled like a school girl. I was quite
envious, but then there's nothing to
be done about it, for I find that my
education has been neglected. I can't
sew. There was a needle still stuck in
one of the nighties, Just where Aunt
. Cecilia had left off after the quarrel,
And a tear fell onto it with a splash
as she looked at It Then she left It out, and assured me that it would be finished before the next evening. "It was to have been my bridal . nightie," she said softly. "My bridal nightie." "And it still can be, you dear dar-' AAlng Auntie, there's no reason why -you shouldn't wear it. Just as you planned." "No, Lindsey, I can't bear to thmk ' ir. i , , ga
of it now, somehow, In connection with the fulfillment of my dreams. It Is so intrinsically a part of my unhappy hours, after our separation..
There's lots of time for me to make
another one before my wedding day. I want this new one to be sewn with
lingers that tremble with Joy, and fastened with ribbons of rosy hue,
symbollo of my happiness. Away with
the dark thoughts of the part, away
with everything but dreams of love
and delight. Besides, .it's why, it's
not a bit chic- this pattern any
morel" Which statement proved to me beyond all else, that my Aunt Cecilia is every bit a woman. And one after Jeffry's own heart. Right there and then we planned the most gorgeous trousseau that the feminine heart can desire. I quite for
got about my own creations in the
pleasure of thinking of hers.
It is difficult to realise that I am fourteen years younger than she, when I listen to her discuss her future.
Aunt Cecilia is very innocent nearly
Ignorant about life, and men. I m not.
I face the most brutal facts bravely,
where she covers them up with
camouflage till I could weep for her.
Girls now-a-days are seasoned young
things. Shockingly so. Now I spoke
of my bridal nightie with the non
chalance and aplomb of a woman who has lived to wear several. Something
is wrong with either Aunt Cecilia's
point of view, or mine, without, doubt
I exp'alned to her, with a giggle,
Heart Problems
that possibly 1 was the reincarnation
of some one of those famous women
of history who had been much married; hence my savoir-faire about it
all! Personally, however, I blame Balzac tor my sophistication. His books are a liberal education.

Dear Mrs. Thompsons I am a married woman with a family and a husband. He would rather gamble than do anything else. Although he makes prood money and provides well, he loses a lot playing cards. I do all my own work, sewing and washing, to cut expenses. I lay away $70 to $80 a month, but he draws it out, and when I go to have the bank book checked there is never much left. If I say anything about it he says: "Don't you get everything you want?" or "It's a pity you didn't get John D. Rockefeller's son for a husband." I just feel like leaving and never coming back. I work hard and can't cave. I would like to have a little home of my own and have planned eo much, but my hopes are all leaving me. Please tell me what to do. HELEN MARIE. Spend more money yourself. You work so hard that you make yourself
nervous and unfit to face your problem. You can not make your husband give up gambling by arguing with him. Your best argument will be to keep surplus money out of . his reach. Have more help In your work bo that you will have more time o enjoy yourself. What money you save, put in a personal savings account which he cannot touch. I believe he will be pleased when he finds you are spending more money. A man, as ff$a rulo, does not want his wife to be lose with money and a Blave to work. Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am nineteen years old and an excellent housekeeper. I am without a mother and am keeping house for my father. We have a large family. After my mother filed father's mother stepped In and I was thrown out. I got a light housekeeping room and then I got sick so the people I was staying with took me In a their daughter. The woman was like a mother to me. She has a grown-up son considered very good looking and neat. At first he was just like a brother to me, but after I went back home he became moro than a brother. He thinks a great deal of me and I also of him.
fe has kissed me several times. Id that wrong? I learned to love hini. He made a date with me to see him uptown, but I did not see him. Later I saw him and the first thing he did was to apologize and he wanted to kiss me again. Ho has been married, but is divorced. What should I do? I am worrying about him because I love him and would like to go with him. I THANK YOU. Tell the young man that you have decided not to kiss him. Stick to what you pay. Unless he asks to marry you, he has no right to ask for your kisses. In the future do not make plans to meet him in town. Ask him to call for you at your home. If you fly to him too quickly, he will lose interest. Mien want most the women who are f-Vi to get.
