Suffrage in the Balance

. Suffragists anxious for the early ratification

of the nineteenth amendment are becoming

slightly agitated lest the positive assurances o

llrs. Catt and other leaders are not to be fulfilled,

says the Indianapolis Star. Two states of the ne

cessary 3b are yet lacKing. Washington can doubtless be depended on for a favorable vote, and

Delaware has been counted on as reasonably cer

tain, but as the day of voting approaches doubts

arise. Strong opposition to ratification has de

teloped and there are fears that the latter state may line up with states farther south. Much indignation is manifested by anti3 over the action

ported the amendment contrary to a large popu

lar vote against it and feeling seems to run high on both sides and has extended into Delaware.

It is admitted by suffragists that in case Dela

ware fails them, their only hope is getting a special session called in Vermont or Connecticut, or perhaps both. The governor of Vermont has so

far flatlv refused to call a session, that it is

hardly likely that he can be persuaded to change his mind. Even with the necessary one vote, the women admit that they would be without the leeway of a single state should the decision of the supreme court in the Ohio referendum case go against them. It is a close shave that the amendment confronts at present, with the chances of success and failure at the last moment about equal. Miss Alice Paul, chairman of the National Woman's

party, who led the offensive picketing movement in Washington last year, has moved on Delaware and is indulging in loud talk that will do her cause more harm than good. While it is true that the suffrage cause is practically won, there is a possibility that the women may yet suffer an unexpected delay in the enjoyment of their triumph.

ATTACK ON U. S. CONSULATE WORK OF BOLSHEVIKI By Associated Press) GENEVA, March 18. Police authorities declare that investigations they have made relative to the bombing of the American consulate at Zurich confirm their theory that the attack -was a 3lshevik attempt at revenge for the deportation of soviet sympathizers from the United States. Regret for the incident has already

been expressed to Washington by the Swiss government.

HOW MANY EYES HAVE YOU? ':: Some people have only two eyes others have a thousand. ; Happiness is just relative, hut success is determinative. We think happiness, but we select success and then enlarge it all the time according to our will. Every day we all miss very wonderful sights and experiences. We don't look their w ay. We close a lot of our eyes. Every once in a while someone comes along who explains the most common sort of things to us and at once they loom quite wonderful. ;. Some people look up into the sky and only soe what they hnve been told are stars. 'Others see a bil'lon worlds many much larger thar 'lie one on which we live, and with 'crests attached to them so wondPn'v that men have given their entire liv to their study. The common dandelions sere among the most gorgeous of flowers, but the majority of folks think of 'hem only as weeds to be gotten rid as soon ts possible. Those who have studied the tiny snowflakes, and ahve 6een with their own eyes the miraculous formations Into which they fall to the earth, are well repaid. It's the number of things which we eee that makes us intelligent. Our two eyes are only our master eyes. They father the scores of other eyes which make us all that we are. "We may even close our two eyes and etill see any number of things. For serins is also remembering. How many eyes have you? And do you use more than the two which but window all the other3?

Dinner Stories

Senator Borah was discussing one of the German counter-propositions. "The spirit of the thing," he said, reminds me of old man Green. "Old man Green's house was overrun with rats and he hired a ratcatcher for $2 to clean the rodents out. "The ratcatcher worked like a Trojan. He killed a whole packing case of rats. Then he said to the old man: " 'There you are, Mr. Green. My job Is - done. You'll have no more trouble with rats, and you needn't bother about these here dead ones, neither. I'll cart 'em away myself.' "'How much do I owe you friend?' said old man Green. " 'Two slmoleons, like what you agreed on, boss.' "Then the old man pointed to the huge packing case and said in a protesting voice: '"Don't I get nothing for all them rats?" A preacher conducting a mission announced that he would speak the next night on "Liars." The audience was requested to read up in advance the seventeenth chapter of St. Mark. Next evening, before opening, with piercing glance he inquired how many people had read the chapter suggested. A score or so held up their hands. At which he thundered: "You're the very persons I want to talk to there isn't any seventeenth chapter of St. Mark."

FOR PRESIDENT

t wr glif J , I

SENATOR HARDING

jaio, me aiomer oi tresiaems, presents anomer aisunguisnea son lor im consideration of Republican voters ln tho person of Senator Warren G. Harding. His life has been one of strenuous toil and endeavor since the- day he was apprenticed a printer. Early manhood found him a valiant editor and, like the beloved McKinley, a vigorous defender of tbe political principle! of Abraham Lincoln. Editor Harding's virile Republicansim gained him fame beyond the confines of the Buckeye state as far back as 1896, since whtcn time he has belonged not more to the Republican party of Ohio than to th Republican party of America. Senator Harding is now serving his first term in the United States Senate, having been elected in 1914 by the re-united Republican and Progressive parties, bis majority being more than one hundred thousand. Harding As a Business Man

One of the leading business men of the nation says this of Senator Harding: "Warren G. Harding Is essentially a business man. He has . ae business instinct. Beginning with nothing, and building up a big business of his own, and then taking extensive Interests in all of the other big enterprises of the city in which he lives, has put

him ln close touch with the problems of production, transportation and distribution of both manufactured articles and foodstuffs; and it has brought him in close touch with the problems of capital and labor. "Now, as never before, this country needs a president who has had practical business experience and who can bring us back to safe and sane thinking and safe and sane living."

Is a Man of McKinley Type

In many respects Mr. Harding resembles that other favorite son of Ohio William' McKinley. Both were of Scottish descent. In presence, in manner of speech, in ability to judge of men, ln careful, painstaking mastery of detail and tact in bringing together opposing factions on some

common ground, there is a remarkable similarity. Mr. Harding is first of all a patriot. He believes in America; in its ferm of government; is proud or her past and hopeful for her future; and he believes that our highest obligation is to our own, and that the problems which vitally concern us are domestic and not foreign. ,

Opposes Compulsory Military Service In a speech at Columbus, Ohio, February 23rd, Senator Harding said: "We might well pledge ourselves never again to be so unmindful of our national defense. We ought to have an ample navy, as our first line of defense. We ought to more than keep apace we ought to lead the world in the development of aviation and be stronger in the air than we are on the sea. We ought to have a stronger army than we have ever known in peace heretofore, and we ought to have all the young manhood of the republic know the benefits of discipline and physical betterment that come of military training, but it ought to b3 VOLUNTARY, not compulsory; supported by the government ln camp, In the national guard, in schools and colleges. It ought to e made so popular and so helpful that young America would seek it as a trifilege rather than accept it as a duty of compulsory requirement."
