TAXPAYER'S LEAGUE VICIOUSLY ASSAILS . PREBLE ROAD PLAN

EATON. O., March 12. Preble county has a new organization a taxpayers' league. It takes the name of the Preble County Taxpayers' league, but up to this time the officerB of the organization have not been publicly announced, i The league's object, It would appear. Is to exercise a watchfulness over the expedlture of county funds and to see to It that reckless extravagance is not Indulged In In doling out the public's money. This to serve as an emergency-brake on taxes. To the proposed improvement of a county highway can unmistakably be traced the league's formation, as the league In a page advertisement In the local newspapers assails the proposed improvement In no uncertain terms. And it is all because brick was designated as the material to enter the improvement. The league contends that bituminous macadam Is good enough. The Eaton-Hamilton pike Is the highway involved. It Is proposed to improve the highway a distance of six miles, under state aid. The county commissioners adopted a resolution recently to brick the highway.

Hie league declares brick paving will cost $40,000 a mile, while twice the same bituminous macadam highway can be constructed for the same money. The league asks the taxpayers if they do not think It unfair and unjust to spend the cost of the new courthouse for six miles of brick highway, "when we can have double the number of miles of a type of highway that will meet our requirements better than brick." Money mad is the United States, declares the league. Alleged reckless extravagance of the state and nation since the beginning of the war is cited. This evil ahould not be allowed to creep Into county affalrs.'the league asserts. The league's advertisement announces that within the next few days a permanent organization will

. Iwholcsale dealers in crude drugs and medicinal herbs gathered from all parts of the world do not hesitate to eay that the market for the better grades of medicinal herbs, roots, oils, etc., is practically confined to the leading manufacturers Jlhe so-called package medicines, who buy only the very best, and that the manufacturers of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin are the largest users of the best grade -of Egyptian senna leaves in the. world. The potency of a tea brewed from senna leaves to relieve constipation has long been recognized, not only. by the medical profession, but by the public generally; ; .in fact, senna has been known and -. used in medicine for more than ,Cve centuries. The cheaper grades of senna, such as are usually sold at retail, have, however, a tendency to gripe and cramp

which makes their use unpopular with most people. 1 In Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin -the finest Egyptian senna is combined with pepsin and other -valuable agents, essential oils and pure ' cane sugar syrup to make an exceptionally valuable tonic-laxative for the relief of constipation and resulting . disturbances of the . stomach and bowels. The com- . plete formula is plainly printed in -English, French, and Spanish on every package. Thousands who formerly bought an inferior grade of senna leaves now use Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin instead. It is sold in drug stores everywhere. In spite of the fact that Dr. CaJd well's Syrup Pepsinisthelargntsellinz . liquid laxative in the world, there being over 6 million bottles sold each year, many who need its benefits have not yet used it. WHEN a business fails the financial statement reflects the conditions at that timej but the real reason for failure is seldom shown. In many cases the true reason is that the business performed no service which was necessary or useful to society generally. Every individual must give a useful service if he is to prospiw, for society will refuse to maintain him if he fails to be useful to society. " When we find a business which has been notably prosperous over a long period of years, we may be sure that it has won its position by performing a service useful and necessary. That, in a word, explains the continued, ever-increasing success of the Standard Oil Company, (Indiana.) This Company is included in the list of big business because the ideals of service which it holds and maintains are big. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) is big because it recognizes the necessity of developing its sphere of usefulness to the highest degree and of maintaining this high standard in spite of every obstacle. The success of the Standard OilCompany (Indiana) proves that it is performing a useful service and that every link in its chain of achievements is delivering an added benefit to civilization and to you. Service is the first consideration of this organization, for it knows that by increasing its service to the public its earnings will automatically grow, and all will profit by its activities.
