Franchise League

- - With the ratification of the suffrage amendment In West Virginia only two states remain to Bign it before the Seventeenth amendment will become b part of the United States constitution. Regarding the present national situation and need for Wayne county women to prepare to vote in the May 4 primaries if the Susan B. Anthony amendment becomes a law in time, Miss Esther Griffin White, woman's Republican chairman said Thursday: "The governor of Washington has agreed to call a special session of the state legislature the latter part of March. Washington is a suffrage state which practically assures ratification bringing the national vote down to one state needed, with all of April left, in which to obtain it." "Therefore it remains not a question of waiting to see if the women of Indiana are going to vote In the primaries but to immediately proceed with all epediency in preparing to vote. Hence, it is vastly important that the women of Wayne county co'operate in every way possible with the Republican precinct women chairman, in taking the woman's poll, that we may be ready with the men for our primaries." A special session to commemorate the work of the suffrage pioneers will be held in connection with the Franchise league convention at the Claypool Hotel, Indianapolis, April 6 and 8. As this Is the last convention the Franchise league as euch will ever hold, the program committee has add

ed a number of features which are not usually Included and which will add greatly to the interest of the meeting. A brief survey of early suffrage activities in Indiana will be given, as far as possible by the women who took part in them, and there will be reminiscences of the different times of which the present generation has little conception. Suffrage pioneers will be honored. Honor will be paid also to the memory of Dr. Shaw, who, while not a Hoosler, gave inspiration to many Indianians who came Into direct contact with her. Several of these will speak of their personal debts to the great leader. Leagues over the state are busy delving into their early history, so that their local pioneers will not be forgotten. No record of these early suffrage workers has ever been kept, and the Franchise league board has decided that such a permanent record should be made now. The names will be read at convention and honor be given. The local and civic programs of the New League of Women Voters are arousing the interest of the Franchise leagues over the state. Although they cannot adopt the new name until after the state organization has done so at the state convention, several of the large leagues are holding meetings

this week and next to prepare to take up a plan of civic activities. Every city league will have its American citizenship,' women In Industry, child welfare, social hygiene, food supply and demand committees, active regarding local conditions as well as working in connection with the state and national committees. In addition every league will have committees which its local and temporary needs suggest, such as parks and playgrounds, free dispensaries, municipal art, public health, and other things. In some of the local leagues plans are already making for these civic undertakings.
