Accidents in Indiana

Indiana workmen grew careless during July, August and September of last year, says Thomas

Roberts, member of the industrial board of Ind

iana. Accidents increased 70 per cent in 400

shops, employing 50,000 men, over the number

of accidents in the previous three months, al

though the number of employes increased only

(i per cent.

Twenty-four per cent of all the accidents were injuries to the eyes. Such accidents, Mr. Rob

erts pointed out, could be obviated if the em

ployes wore goggles and the employers insisted

upon their use. He also showed that 28 per cent of all accidents were caused by workmen operating machines in such fashion that accidents resulted. Carelessness and lack of understanding oi' the proper methods of handling the machines were assigned as reasons for this percentage. Industrial accidents cause loss both to em

ployer and employe. The employe is incapacitat

ed ; and even if he is paid compensation, he would have been better off had he been able to remain on the job. The employer loses the time of worker while his machine stands idle, and society as a whole loses the productive output of the worker. . ,4 1 j&jiiiitt

, Rural Route Carriers Rural route carriers in the United States are leaving the service at a rate that is alarming officials of the postoffice department. The reason usually assigned for their resignation, it is reported, is their inability to earn a living and pay for the upkeep of their automobiles or horses.

Rural route carriers find themselves in the predicament of teachers and ministers who are

unwilling to quit the service, yet find it impos

sible to make ends meet with their meager sal

aries. Teachers and ministers have not resorted

to strikes to obtain improved living conditions, but they are forsaking their callings by the hundreds. The rural route mail delivery has become a public necessity. The rural communities will not permit the government to curtail the service or eliminate it entirely. The government will be forced to realize its importance by increasing the compensation to carriers. Federal authorities will soon report to congress a plan which will make such salary adjustments that the rural route system will be maintained at a high efficiency.

Charlie and his three sisters had

been to visit a relative in the country. Though the invitation had only been for a week, their stay was gradually lengthening into a month. In fact the uncle was beginning to fear it was going to be a permanent infliction. But eventually they went. "Well," asked he faher, upon the return of his offspring, "was your uncle glad to see you?" Charlie's face lit up with delight at the question. "Glad!" he echod, "Uncle glad! Why dad, he wanted to know why we didn't bring you, mother, the maid, the cat, the canary and the goldfish!" Edith Wharton, engaging a maid for her apartment, interviewed one whose name might very appropriately have been Miss Doolittle. "Of course, madam," said the girl, "you won't expect me to sweep?" "Oh, no, indeed." "Nor answer the doorbell?"

"Certainly not." "Nor ." "No no," Mrs. Wharton interrupted graciously. "I expect none of these

things from my parlor maid. I only

want her to look at, and for that you are too plain."

t Is Acid-Stomach That Makes the Body"SoUR" Old and Weak

What is it that roos so many people of their vitality, youth and good looks makes them all in and decrepit years before their time? Some say it's rheumatism that is ailing them. Others complain of chronic stomach or liver trouble. Others are bilious. Life is a burden to multitudes of dyspeptics. Severe headache, extreme nervousness, insomnia, mental degression, melancholia, anemia, dizziness, vertigo, heart and chest pains, constipation, etc., claim other multitudes. In about nine cases out of ten ACIDSTOMACH is the cause of these ailments. The first symptoms of this condition are nearly always indigestion, heartburn, belching, foodrepeating, painful bloat, gas, etc. An Acid-Stomach cannot properly digest food. Unless food is fully digested its nourishing elements cannot be properly assimilated. Hence the blood becomes thin and impoverished. , No person, no matter how strong or robust he or sne may be, can long withstand the insidious, day-by-day health undermining effects of Acid-Stomach. Even the tasteless acid that causes acid-mouth is powerful enough to eat through the hard enamel of the teeth and cause them to decay. 13 it any wonder, then,

that Acid-Stomach creates such awful havoc throughout the entire system? A modern remedy EATONIC brings wonderfully quick relief in all cases et stomach distress. Makes the stomach cool, sweet and strong, able to digest food properly and thus supply the body with the required amount of nourishment. EATONIC is in tablet form you eat them like a bit of candy. More than 500,000 people in the United States have put EATONIC to the test and caa say that it has rid them of Acid-Stomach.1 The grateful letters from many of these users testify to the merits of this wonderful remedy. Many had been sick and ailing for years, had tried remedy after remedy in vain, and according to their own testimony, only through EATONIC were they able to regain their health. Your druggist has EATONIC and is authorized to refund your money if you are not satisfied. So give it trial today.

IT KEPT ME ON THE JOB STATES SOUTH BEND MAN

John Duck, a pioneer of South Bend, Ind., residing at 916 North Hill street, who is one of the most popular figures at the plant of the Oliver Plow & Implement Company where he is employed as millwright and carpenter, declared in a statement the other day that had it not been for the help of Tanlac he would have been compelled, cn account of rheumatism, to give up his work. Mr. Duck has been a resident of

South Bend for sixty-five years and has seen the town grow from a village of six hundred people to a flourishing city of eighty-five thousand population, j "Day after tomorrow," said Mr. i Duck, "I'll be seventy-one years old ' and I want to tell the people that it's by the help of Tanlac that I am able to successfully hold my place as millwright and carpenter here as the plant. Two years ago I began suffering with rheumatism in my shoulders and arms and no doubt I would be laid up today ;

instead of working if I had not taken Tanlac. My arms would swell up and ache and throb so I could hardly raise my hands to my head. My elbows were so stiff and achy that it was ?gony for me to bend them and in 1 damp or cold weather, especially, I was almost unfit for work. Frequently such keen tutting, pains would shoot back and forth across my shoulders '

that I could hardly stand it. 1

"But I never was a hand to give up or take medicine and I just kept dragging along until my suffering got to be so severe that I had to take serious notice. It was either take something and get rid of the rheumatism or give up my job. Well, Tanlac

was the nrst thing came into my mind as so many people were talking about how it had helped them, so I got a bottle and, while it seems remarkable, it's a fact, within a. week's time I hardly knew I ever had rheumatism. My elbows stopped swelling, the pain, soreness and stiffness disappeared and I could use my arms about as wrell as I ever could. I had never noticed anything except rheumatism being the matter with me, but Tanlac has gotten my whole system in condition to where I feel a hundred per cent, better all over. I keep Tanlac in my house all the time now and I never take anything else for the ailments it's recommended for. Tanlac saves me time, suffering and money, and I'm giving these facts in my case for what they may be worth to others who are needing such a medicine." "Tanlac is sold in Richmond by Clem Thistlethwalte and by the leading druggists in every town. Advertisement.

Flu This Year Is Milder While we know very little more

about the flu now than we did last year the germ itself has never been positively identified still most authorities agree that the flu germs are breathed in. If the system is in good shape and the membrane or lining of the air passages is in healthy condition these germs are thrown off. A good plan Is to melt a little Vick's VapoRub in a spoon night and morning, and inhale the vapors, also apply a little up the nostrils several times a day, especially just before being exposed to crowds. Treat All Colds Promptly Above all, keep free from colds, as colds irritate the lining of the air passages and make them real breeding grounds for germs. Prompt use of Vick's VapoRub aids in preventing colds. For head co!ds, sore throat or hoarseness, rub Vick's well over the throat and chest and cover with a warm flannel cloth. For deep chest colds, severe sore throat or bronchitis, hot wet towels should first be applied to the throat, chest and back between the shoulder blades to open the pores. Then Vick's should be rubbed in over the parts until the skin is red spread on thickly and covered with two thicknesses of hot flannel cloths. Leave the clothing loose around the neck, so the vapors, released by the body heat, may be freely inhaled. These vapors, Inhaled with each breath, carry the medication directly to the lungs and air passages. At the same time Vick's is absorbed thru and stimulates the skin, thus aiding to relieve the congestion within. Use of External Treatment for Colds Increasing Vick's VapoRub is the discovery of a North Carolina druggist who found how to combine in Salve form, the standard time tested remedies, Cam-; phor Menthol Eucalyptus Thyma,' etc. so that when the salve is applied to the body heat, these ingredients are liberated in the form of vapors. Vick's is particularly recommended for children's croup or colds, since it is externally applied and therefore can be used freely and often without the slightest harmful effects. The best evidence of the value of Vick's is the steadily increasing number of people who have been converted to the use of this "outside" treatment. Beginning with the customers of a Bmall retail drug store, the use of

Vick's has grown year by year state by state until now more than 17 million Jars are used annually. And this in spite of the fact that Vick's is a new form of treatment to many folks in the North and West. Vicks can be had at all druggists in three sizes 30c, 60c or $1.20. Advertisement.

JAMES DRYER.

Although he is 93 years old, James Dryer, 425 Clinton street, Cincinnati, still walks to the Public Library and back home again every morning, and he says he can make the two-mile trip without resting. Mr. Dryer started taking Vola-Tonic, "Builder of Strength," recently, and declares it has made him feel years younger. "I hadn't been taking Vola-Tonic long when I could see it was building up my strength and now I feel a great deal stronger," he said. Mr. Dryer knew Cincinnati as a village. He probably is one of the oldest residents of the city now living. lie said he came to Cincinnati when he was 8 years old in the year 1835. At that time Cincinnati was a small town of between two and three thousand population, Mr. Dryer said. He has resided in the same house at 42f Clinton street for the last forty-eight years. During the Civil War Mr. Dryer served in the commissary department.

Later he was a steward on several different steamboats plying the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Now in his old age Mr. Dryer is glad he has found Vola-Tonjc to keep his strength built up. Continuing, he said about Vola-Tonic: "Unfortunately, I had influenza last winter and had not been strong since. My vitality naturally-was low due to my age, but the influenza further weakened me. I couldn't sleep well and was very nervous at times. "Vola-Tonic has built up my .sj-ptem all over and has made me feel years younger. I can walk two miles tc the library and bacK without resting now. "I think Vola-Tonic is excellent for elderly people and for anybody else who needs more strength."
