k Secretary Lansing's Dismissal

Public sympathy y is lAyely with Secretary Lansing in his sudden withdrawal from the cabinet. Subsequent developments may throw a new light, on the circumstances surrounding the dif

ferences that arose between the president and the secretary of state, but from the correspondence vthat passed between the two men, it is apparent

mat secretary Lansing, iar trom . usurping

power, manfully tried to promote the national . welfare at a time of stress and strain. When Secretary Lansing called the cabinet members into session to consider the welfare of the republic,. President Wilson was physically in no condition to consider the weighty matters of state that were pressing for attention. Some one had to act, and especially so since the rumors

of the president's illness were of such menacing nature that the whole country was alarmed. Secretary Lansing did not stand alone in his decision to call together the cabinet. Others of that body concurred with his opinion. If there had been any-semblance of usurpation of power by the secretary of state, it is reasonable to assume that his colleagues would have opposed his step. If the cabinet erred in meeting to discuss matters of national importance, who else would have the power to do so? The dismissal of Secretary Lansing for summoning the cabinet into session, and the grounds upon which his action was condemned, naturally impel us to wonder who is to consider our national welfare when the president is ill. If his official family has not the right so to do, under the president's condemnation of Secretary Lansings the time has come when this right and privilege should be fixed and determined. No act of President Wilson has provoked such bitter condemnation as his request for the resignation of secretary of state. The press is almost unanimous in its criticisms of the president and its warm praise for the work done by Secretary Lansing. The country need not be surprised if disclosures of grave importance and significance follow his removal.

THE GEORGE MATTHEW ADAMS DAILY TALK

I AM

First, I am the one who writes and the one who reads this little talk. Im I and you I I am a human being, both good and bad. I am able, resourceful, intelligent tho bothlearned and unlearned I am a potential. I walk around in a world that is only a fractional part discovered. The field in which I walk and move and have my being is a very great one, tho I have cultivated it only in spots. I have much to do. I am unafraid when I understand. I am the rich ruler in a kingdom where bands, and feet, and eyes, and brain cells, and a heart, exchange courtesies and ask favors of no man. I am the handler of Jobs, both great and small. I am an observer. I am made of clay, tho held together with mixtures of the rarest import. Generations are in my veins. Dead ages teem their silent echoes thruout the walls of my frame. I am not easily understood, tho I am easily handled. A little child could lead me. I am invariable, for I like what is the common liking of all. I often walk thru other people's houses sometimes without asking. And so do they likewise with me. It should be that way. We all hold elements of. the very worst and ths very best within us. I am not always certain of my course. I believe in asking questions, acknowledging errors and passing on. I am in the employ of the Infinite! I am a believer in the adage of every man to his own job but when another can do that Job better than I, then the Job belongs to him. I am what I am but no bigger, better, or more able than I do.

Syndicate, Inc.) (Copyright, 1919, By The Wheeler OLIC1A. This Name is derived from the same root as Alke, and represents an attempt at greater euphony. The curious part of it is that the name, In its original form, is really not that of a woman at all, but of r, man. It is derived from the Anglo-Saxon Adeligis, of which the feminine form was Adelgiss, but was not frequently given to women. Instead it was sacred to the tons of tho house, principally among the nobility. The name of itself means noble, in both the masculine and feminine forms. The name is purely English having however, slight Teutonic flavor. An argument i put forward by some experts that the riame is derived from the Frankish Adalhert or Adelchen, meaning "daughter." Alix or Alisa in Lombardy was naturalized in England when Alix la Belle married Henry I. The name, originally masculine, ac

cording to the best authorities, however, represents Adelgis, and not Adtlgisa, making the proper feminine form Aliza. Some believe that Eliza, generally believed to be a derivative of Elizabeth, is this missing form. For proof of Aliza as-" the representative of Adelgisa. the Liber Vitate of Durham records the change in Adelgisse Irom the first noble lady of that name, who laid her gifts upon the altar. By contraction it became Adellza, Aaliza and Aliza. The talismanic stone of Alicia is the Alexandrite, a Russian gem. It is found in the emerald mines of that nation, being of a beautiful green shade which changes to columbine red. The Russians believe that it brings great good fortune. When the subject of its favorite's dream it signifies hope. Monday is Alicia's lucky day and seven her lucky number. Her flower is the white hawthorne, a beautiful bud. THE BROTHER HAS FALLEN UPON A GREAT TRUTH (From the Portage, Pa., Dispatch) It seems to be an incontrovertible fact that when the great mass of the people demands a change, or a new condition of things, there is little use tor the minority to oppose it. A liquor dealer, an undertaker and

Observing that the eaves over hia kitchen had become clogged by autumn leaves. Mr. Flggins. valiant head of the family, climbed a tree that stood near the house, while hia beloved Sophia watched him from below. Just as he was about to scoop out a handful of leaves, the dead limb 1 on which he was standing gave way and he started to fall. Instinctively grasping at other limbs, he managed to check his fall, and hung there, head downward, his face the color of a boiled beet. "Sophia, quick!" he gasped. "Oh, Arthur!" she yelled. "Quick, a chair!" In a flash it was there. "Now stand upon it." "But, Arthur," she expostulated, "I'm not strong enough to help you down!" "I'll get down all right soon as I can get right end upward." he panted. "But what I want you to do is to take this fountain pen out of vest pocket. It's leaking like the dickens!" "How did you get on?" The sweet young maiden breathed the words into her lover's manly ear as she met him at the passage. He had been "seeing father" and she wanted to know the result. "Oh, your father is heartless!" said the young man indignantly. "I I told him I could not live without you, and " "Yes. yss!" impatiently said the girl. "What did he say?" "He merely offered to pay funeral expenses."

WORLD NEEDS

(Continued from Page One) factured products we need or use. Second, ths extravagant way of living, higher wages and less hours. The quickest and surest way (but I would not like to see it) would be to produce less and quit buying. That would make labor more plentiful and cheaper on the farm C. J. K. It seems the government has wanted lower food prices. If so it must see that everything that enters into the cost of producing food or stock must be lowered. When hogs sold for $22 per humlred. they were high and now everything the farmer has to buy to produce a crop is still high. If a

farmer counted the hours of hard labor he puts in he is poorer paid than any other class of laborers. Yet the government created a high price of labor on railways, thereby taking help from the farm. The price the farmer must pay for fertilizer, feed?, etc., are still very high, but his need for these things have not diminished in the least and he must continue to buy or else he must curtail his business. If he takes the latter course he will be obliged to reduce his live stock and omit many things that ought to be done. I think there will be less produced in 1920.

Mrs. Henry Thomas, of Arba, Randolph County, Ind., during a recent visit to this city, called at Thistlethwaite's drug store, 6th and Main streets. "I want to relate my experience with Pepgen," she said to them and then Mrs. Thomas told the following story: "It is impossible for nie to think of anything that will completely destroy nervous force any more than loss of sleep. Many a night I have gone to bed and not been able to secure one wink of sleep. In the morning when I arose I felt more tired than when I went to bed, often with a headache, and with my eyes burning like coals of tire.

"I have not been a sound sleeper for a long time and I notice that I am especially distressed in this way when I eat a hearty supper. I attribute my nervousness to indigestion. Rich foods were very hard for me to hold
