p EDWARDS ON BODY TO HELP TEACHERS President David M. Edwards of Earl-
ham has been appointed a member of a committee to assume leadership in
the state-wide campaign for the ad'
vancement of the leaching profession.
announced Thursday, by State Superintendent L. N. Hlmes.
The committee was appointed fol
lowing a conference of educational and
civic leaders of the state, at which
tbe seriousness of the school situation
. repultlng from the shortage of teach
ers was declared to "threaten the
foundations of American institutions
B. J. Llewelyn, superintendent New
castle schools, and H. B. Roberts, su
perintendent Henry county scnoois, are also on the committee. OBcar H.
Williams, state supervisor of teacher
training, was named secretary. The conference was called byMr,
Hlmes to formulate a prpgram for teachers' week, March 7-14, and prac
tically every educational and civic or
ganization of the state was represented. Dr. V. L. Bryan, president of In
diana university, In addressing the
conference, sold that "we have got to do something to save the teaching nrofesslon." He suggested that the
present situation is even more serl
ous than that which faced the schools in 1917 at the beginning of the war. He said that it might be well for the councils of defense to be called back
into operation to help get the problem before the people. He urged a campaign for both common and higher education.

RIBBON TRIMMING SMART FOR SPRING
if '
This little frock is one of the smartest models shown for the cominjc spring days. It is designed in the well-liked blue jersey, with the unique trimming of small loops of gros grain ribbon. The popular round neck and the short sleeves are also added features of this frock.
fRnnyright. 1919. by The Wheeler Syndicate. Inc.) Lives there a man with soul so dead, who never to himself hath said, "By Jove! This Is St. Valentine's Day! Guess 111 send the Wiff 6ome roses!" and then promptly forgotten all about it? You may laugh, you may scoff at this Day, if you will, But the fragrance of sentiment clings round it still; And so long as the thrill of it never grows cold, -You are one with sweet Youth! When it dies, you are old!
To forget a woman's birthday may be a compliment; to overlook her at
Christmas may be defensible; but to
neglect her on St. Valentine's Day is a sin against all the gods of sentiment
and a shock that her vanity cannot
sustain.
' It is the feat of a bachelor's life, to
think of something to send a girl on
St. valentine s Day, which will beauti
fully express his devotion and yet be
perfectly safe and non-committal.
Oh well, Algernon, if you can't be
original, make a dozen crosses on a sheet of note-paper and mail it to her and her imagination will translate it
into poetry for you.
Old valentines are the immortelles
on the tombs of dead romances.
Heaven may deny a woman beauty, fate may deny her riches, life may
deny her a husband; but when nature denies her sentiment, she robs her of the supreme gift of the gods Eternal
Youth!
A small boy proclaims his love with paper hearts and paper cupids; a lover indites his on bond note-paper,
but a husband's seems to think that the . only convincing way to express his devotion Is with a nice, pink check. (And, perhaps it IS.) On this Day of Days, a woman's heart fills up and slops over, with tender memories of every man who ever loved her.

MAN WALKS AFTER 2 LONG YEARS OF USING CRUTCHES
Veteran of the Civil War Tells
of Remarkable Relief He Received Thru Using Trutona. FORT WAYNE, Ind., Feb. 13. "I've walked on crutches for two years but now, although it sounds almost too good to be true, I've thrown them away and I'm walking as good as I ever did, considering my age," John
Pontinus, a well known Fort Wayne roan who lives at 1302 Wabash Avenue, said on December IS. Mr. Pontinus, who is 77 years old, says Trutona, the Perfect Tonic, is totally responsible for his remarkable improvement. "Ever since I was wounded during the Civil War" he continued, "I have 5-uffered from occasional attacks of rheumatism. My knees would swell up and ache so at times I would have to quit going. My rheumatism has teen getting worse in the last two years though, and I have been forced to use crutches most of the time lately. Of course I didn't get much exercise and this caused me to become constipated. Then dizzy spells began to bother me. They'd come over me suddenly and I'd have to stop and stand still for a few moments before going further. "I realized that I was in a critical condition and was willing to try almost pnything when a friend told me about Trutona. I took a tablespoonful three times a day according to directions and it wasn't but a few days when I noticed that the old numb, dead, aching feeling was beginning to vanish from niy knee and the swelling heean to disappear at the same time. "When T had finished my second bottle of Trutona I threw my crutches away
and. I have been walking around un-
aided ever since. Trutona regulated my bowels almost immediately and has put an end to the former miserable dizzy speUs."
