'U Statement About College i -

t President Neilson of Smith college has addressed the following to the

Palladium:

My attention has been drawn to a

dispatch published in your paper deal

ing with alleged canvassing by mem

bers of Smith college in guise of street peddlars, mentioning a student from Richmond as prominent among those taking part. I should be glad if you would give publicity to the fact that the dispatch is without foundation

from beginning to end. No such can

vass has taken place in the towns mentioned, nor have undergraduates

been engaged in anything of the kind,

Neither Governor Coolidge nor I could have been called upon to defend

methods which have not been em

ployed. I regret that a number of newspapers hare been victimized by

some news agency seeking to make

business without regard to truth. Sincerely, yours,

TUESDAY Afternoon and Evening THURSDAY Afternoon, and Evening SATURDAY Morning, Afternoon and -,. Evsnlng COLISEUM

The executive committee of the

American Legion declared that every

former service man and woman' Is

entitled to compensation in the form and amount of one $50 bond for each month of service and that, with a

single exception, legislation to this ef

fect is paramount with congress. The

exception is legislation still uncom

pleted, affecting the rights of widows

and orphans of deceased former serv

ice men and of disabled ex-service

men.

A committee on soldier beneficial

legislation which is to meet in Wash

ington on Feb. 16 was instructed to the effect that the enactment of the bonus legislation is a "paramount

obligation" on the part of the government with the single exception noted,

A gift of the legfon of $500,000 from the National War Work Council of the T. M. C. A. was announced at the meeting. This is a surplus left in the

Y. M. c. A. treasury after the remit

tance by the French and American governments of transportation charges for canteen supplies during the war. The money will be held as a trust fund, the Income to be used "in furtherance of activities for the benefit

of former service men." A letter accompanying the gift from William Sloane, chairman, and John R. Mott, general secretary .of the council, made this suggestion. , Considerable time was devoted by the committee to a discussion of the affairs of the American Legion Weekly, the publication of the national organization. Although a suspension of the present publication was decided upon after the issue of Feb. 13, 1920, a magazine in another form will be issued thereafter, for it was decided that such a publication is not inconsistent with the financial resources of the legion. A new board of directors,

including newspaper, magazine and advertising experts, will be appointed, while the present board and the editor are to be "relieved from further duty"

in connection with the magazine.

Wayne Service Men Would

Get $1200,000 Under Bill Wayne county's service men would

get approximately $1,200,000 from Uncle Sam, under the plan proposed

by the Fordney bill, now before congress. This plan , proposed to give

$1 to each man, for each day he spent in military service.

There were approximately 2,400 Wayne County men in service, and the length of service averages 500

days per man.

BANKS MAY LIST LIBERTIES AT PAR

National Banks of the city 'and

county have received letters from

the comptroller of currency, authorizing the listing of Liberty bonds among

their assets at the purchase price in

stead of the current market value, it

was learned Wednesday. The ruling

means that bonds purchased by the banks during the original selling campaigns can ' be listed at par but

those purchased by the bank at dis

counts must be carried on the books as assets at the purchase price. The letter follows in parti There Is no cause for anxiety because of the

recent decline in the market value of

Liberty bonds. "The fall in price is

no reflection upon their Intrinsic

value and desirability, but the lower quotations offer investors an extraordiary opportunity to obtain at very attractive prices the best security in the world." "The people of this country need

have no doubt of the ability of the

nation to now and always meet in full

every obligation and commitment, and

It is the opinion of well iniormea students of the situation that It would not be a long while before Liberty bonds and Victor notes will command not only their par value, but probably

s considerable premium.

HOG 8 ALE TOTALS $9,327. ELWOOD. Ind Feb. 1L The B. B. Johnson tt Sons sale of big type Poland China hogs here Tuesday totaled $9,327. Forty-two hogs were sold at an average of $222. The largest of the lot went to Henderson Bros. & Beatty of Sharpsville at $850.

This new love between nations is a beautiful thing, but it is beginning to show the strain of competition for the same markets.

WHOLE COMMUNITY WAS SURPRISED BY ILLINOIS WOMAN

"My wonderful recovery has not only been a great surprise to my husband and myself, but to all our neighbors for miles around where we live." said Mrs. Ida Beal, who resides ot Normal, Illinois, on R. F. D. 4. 1 v "Why, the people all along the way to Bloomlngton are talking about the difference Tanlac has made in me," she added, "and I feel it my duty to tell everybody about this grand medicine. ' ; - -- 'For twelve years at least my kidneys have bothered me and I have suffered with almost unbearable pains In my back. But this was not the only trouble by any means, for at the time I got Tanlac I had not enjoyed a good meal in ten years on account of a chronic case of indigestion. There was hardly a minute I was free

from suffering, and the pains in my

back were so severe at times that I

simply had to sit down and shut my eyes and hold my head. At times I was almost deathly sick at my stomach, and my kidneys disturbed me so often at night I couldn't get any sound

sleep, and my back hurt me so bad in the mornings I could hardly dress myself. It was all I could do to get in and out of bed, and I couldn't stoop

over and pick up anything to save

my life on account of the pains in my

back. I could not eat anything without suffering so from bloating, palpitation of the heart and shortness of

breath that I would almost faint. I

wasn't able to work but an hour or so

a day and that would lay me up in

bed with an awful headache.

"This is Just the condition I was in

when I began taking Tanlac, but I am

simply feeling like a different woman

now. Tanlac neipea me rignt irom

the start and in a few days after I

began taking it I felt so much better;

that I. was surprised and wondered Ir it would continue td help me until I got well. I have taken eight bottles now and as I said, everybody who knows me is talking about my recovery. My kidneys and back never bother me now and my stomach is in the best of condition. I am eating three hearty meals a day and enjoy them all and never feel a touch of indigestion. I am enjoying good health for the first time in twelve years. Life Is a pleasure to me again and I feel so grateful that I want to tell everybody about Tanlac." Tanlac is sold in Richmond by Clem Thistlethwaite; in Greensfork by C. D. Corine; in Cambridge City by Mr. Dean House; in Pershing by Sourbeer & Rodenberg; in Centervllle by Centervllle Pharmacy; In Dublin by E. R. Money; in Williamsburg by S. Merton Catey Co., and in Milton by W. L. Parkins. Advertisement.

To Prcwcit Fit aid Colis Three Roles You Should Observe

(1) Sleep 8 hours With windows wide open (2) Eat wisely exercise regularly don't worry (3) Avoid crowds and persons having colds

Flu this Year is Milder The rules given above, recommended by the New York Board of Health, are guides to good health at all times. Particularly Bhould they be followed just now, when Influenza Is again abroad in the land.. Authorities agree, however, that roe flu this year is less severe than in the last epidemic the attacks are shorter and the death rate lower. In fact, many physicians Insist that the epidemics now being reported from so many sections are not flu at all, but simply the oldfashioned grip. Keep the Air Passages Healthy While we know very little more about the flue now than we did last year the germ itself has never been positively identified still most authorities agree that the flu germs are breathed In. If the system is in good shape end the membrane or lining of air passages is in healthy condition these germs are thrown off. A good plan is to melt a little Vick's VapoRub in a spoon, night and morning, and inhale the vapors, also apply a little up the nostrils several times a day, especially Just before being exposed to crowds. Treat All Colds Promptly Above all, keep free from colds as colds irritate the lining of the air passages and makes them real breeding grounds for germs. Prompt use of Vick's VapoRub aids in preventing colds. For head colds, sore throat or hoarseness, rub Vicks well over the throat and chest and cover with a warm flannel cloth. For deep chest colds, severe sore throat or bronchitas, hot wet towels should first be applied to the throat.

chest and back between the shoulder blades, to open the pores. Then Vicks Bhould be rubbed in over the parts until the skin is red spread , on thickly and cover with two thicknesses of hot flannel cloths. Leave the clothing loose around the neck, so the vapors released by the body heat may be freely Inhaled. , These vapors, inhaled with each breath, carry the medicine directly to the lungs and air passages. At the same time Vicks is absorged thru and stimulates the skin, thus aiding to relieve the congestion within. Use of External Treatments for Colds Increasing Vick's VapoRub is the discovery of a North Carolina druggist who found how to combine in salve form the standard time-tested remedies, Camphor- Menthol - Eucalyptus Thyme, etc. so that when the salve is applied to the body heat these Ingredients are liberated in the form of vapors. Vicks is particularly recommended for children's croup or colds, since it is externally applied and therefore can be used freely and often without the slightest harmful effects. The best evidence of the value of Vicks is the steadily Increasing number of people who have been converted to the use of this "outside" treatment. Beginning with the customers of a' small retail drug store, the use of Vicks has grown year by year state by state until now more than , 17 million jars are used annuaally. And this in spite of the fact that Vicks is a new form of treatment to many folks in the North and West. Vicks can be had at all druggists In three sizes 30c, 60c, or $1.20.

Scientists have discovered that the forest and field are abundantly supplied with vegetation of various kinds, that furnish the ingredients for making a remedy for practically every ill and ailment of mankind. Medicines made from roots, herbs and barks which Nature has placed at the disposal of man, are better than strotjpw mineral mixtures and concoc-i tions.
