Eight checks were fraudulently exe

The purchase of a pound of coffee was effected with a forged $28 check.

Other recent forgeries follow: Check

for $26.80 after -buying some meat; $28 after purchasing a pair of overalls; $8.50 on a $3 purchase of mer

Call Police, Advice

The police advise merchants to call

(hem at once when a check whose

validity they question is offered. The

person should be detained in the store until the police have arrived to make an investigation. Sometimes, the police 6ay, the forgery is not noticed until the check is turned into a bank several days after it was offered. In the meantime the forger has departed from the city. The name of a manufacturer was attached to a number of checks a few days ago. which were cashed. The name of his plant was stenciled with a rubber stamp and a protectograph was used to indicate the amount of the check. All were fraudulent.

Mrs. E. T. Meredith, at left, and daughter, Mrs. Frederick Owen Bohen. Naturally, as far as Washington society was concerned, interest aroused by the appointment of E. T. Meredith as secretary of agriculture in the president's cabinet centered about the new secretary's wife. The efficient manner in which she qualified as an addition to the official social group and in finding a home for her family caused her new acquaintances to decide almost immediately that she is "an ideal cabinet woman." Mrs. Frederick Owen Bohen, daughter of Secretary and Mrs. Meredith, is spending a few days with her parents, at the capital.
