$1 6,000 TOTAL AT JAGKSON-RUSELL DISPOSAL EVENT
1 Sale ' of 3,000 bushels of corn at $1.66 a bushel, featured the general disposal of farm stock at the sale of Caleb Jackson and Clinton Russell, south of Centerville,- Monday. A large crowd attended the sale, which was not hindered by the rain, and the total receipts approximated $16,000.
Thirty tons of hay, most of which was purchased by Albert Higgins, who will move on the Russel farm, sold for $29.75 a. ton. Much interest was shown in the sale of livestock, and
prices averaged high. R. H. Henley and John M. Medearis bought two span of draft mules for $1,000, and a
registered bull sold for $158.
Heifers went for $98 to $120 while yearlings brought fair prices at from
$40 to $50. Brood sows were disposed of at $50 to $75 and a bunch of shoats brought $10 to $20. . Sheep sold for $16 to $18 and a group of sows with pigs averaged $55. The sale was cried by Conniff, Hindman and Weddle, and lunch was served by the Aid society of the Centerville Christian church.

"EXEMPT INCOME" SHOWN FOR FILERS
"What income, if any, is exempt?" This question is. frequently asked by persons subject to the normal income tax. Under the provisions of the income tax law certain items are wholly exempt in figuring the net ini come for the taxable year, and such items need not be included in the return. Exempt income comprises the following items: (1) interest upon (a) the obligations of a state, territory, or any political subdivision thereof, or the District of Columbia; (b) securities issued under the provisions of the fed
eral farm loan act of July 17, 1916; (c) the obligations of the United States or its possessions, except as follows: In the case of obligations of the United States issued after Sept. 1, 1917, the interest shall be exempt only if and to the extent provided in the respective acts authorizing the issue thereof as amended and supplemented and shall be excluded from gross income if and to the extent it is wholly exempt from taxation to the taxpayer. (2) The proceeds of life Insurance policies paid upon the death of the insured to individual beneficiaries or to the estate of the insured; (3) the amount received by the insured as a return of premium or premiums paid by him under life insurance, endowment or annuity contracts, either during the term or at the maturity of the term mentioned in the contract or upon surrender of the contract; (4) the value of the property acquired by gift, bequest, devise or descent (but the income from such property should be included, in the gross Income); (5) amounts received through accident or halth Insurance or under workmen's f omprnpation acts, as compensation for personal injuries, or sickness, plus thn amount of any damages received, v.hether by suit or agreement, on account of such injuries or sickness; (6) so much of the amount received during the war by a person in the ' military or naval forces of the United States as salary or compensation in ptiv form from the United States for active services in such forces as does not exceed $3,500 is exempt.

After an all-day discussion of the Wadsworth bill, section by section,
Franklin D'Olier, national commander
of the American Legion, was authorized to appoint a special committee of
nine to co-operate with the legion s national legislative committee to pre
sent the suggestions of the conference
to congress. It will be the function of this committee to take up with the respective members of congress the
recommendations of the conference so,
that inconsistencies with the princi
plea agreed upon by the conference
may be eliminated.

noon to consider military policy legislation might have the views of the conference before it, a telegram was sent to the chairman of the caucus early in the day before the detailed discussion of the Senate bill started. Milto Plans Observance Of Father and Son Week MILTON, Ind.. Feb. 10. Plans for observation of Father and Son week in Milton were made at a meeting held at the home of E. P. Jones Sunday. Committees were appointed to be in charge of the community celebration for the week. Sunday afternoon at Grange Hall there will be a mass meeting for men and boys. The speaker will be announced later. Monday night will be home night. Each father and son is urged to have a pood time at home that night. Tuesday night will be stunt night at Grange Hall, when fathers and sons will play together. Wednesday night the fathers and sons will meet in prayer meeting at (he Methodist church. Friday night the banquet will be held in the Christian church basement.
