Public Officials in Public Utility Companies Among the incorporators of the Wayne Light and Power company, whose capital stock is $10,000, are found the names of two Wayne county officials Judge Bond of the circuit court
and Prosecutor Gath Freeman. The company?
proposes to buy electric current from the municipal light plant for distribution In the northern part of the county.
The ownership of stocks or bonds in a public utility by a county or city official lays them open to attacks which they cannot ward off very well. The American public frowns upon the presence of its officials in companies that frequently have litigation in the courts. It believes its public officials should have no direct or indirect business connections with a company jthat is to f urnish the public with a utility. Suppose,. for example, that a condition should arise in which the Wayne Light and Power company had violated the statutes. Prosecutor Freeman as a sworn officer of the law, and Judge Eond, as the presiding officer of the bench, would certainly find themselves in an embarrassing position in prosecuting the case and bringing it to trial. i t Our public officers, for their own sake, should not hold stock or bonds in a utility in their own community.

THE FORD TRANSMISSION In studying the forward-drive gears of the, Planetary Transmission, we saw that as the diameter and number of the teeth in the gears approached one another that the speed ratio increased -until finally, when aU the gears are of the same size, the ratio would be Infinity to one, or, in other words, the driven gear would not be moved at all.

gine will have to make 2 revolutions, and the speed ratio will be 2 to 1. Now the driven gear E and its driving gear F must be the same, for both j the slow speed forward and the re- - verse drive. For forward drive we ; assumed that the driven gear had CO ! teeth and its driviug gear 40. How will ! this affect tin; speed ratio of the reverse as above? It will increase the . ratio. As the 40-toothed gears makes 3 ' revolutions, it will come in contact with 120 teeth of the 60-toothed gear ' E, or it will make 3 revolutions to 2 for E. Thus the pin C and engine will have to make 3-2x2 or 3 revolutions for one of the driven gear, giving a speed ratio of 3 to 1. In practice the gear F, O and the f low-speed gear G are built into one piece, called a Triple Gear. For the sake of balance and to allow thinner gears to be used, there are three of these triple gears and three pins C on the flywheel for them. Having the three triple gears meshing with a single set of center gears makes it necessary that the gears be timed For this reason a prick-punch mark is made on them and when aseembling tnese punch marks must be so placed that they come to the marks oh" the center gears. Unless this be done, the gears will not go together. In some planetary transmissions no mark will be found on the center gears. When this la in the case, the p.unch
