WASHINGTON. In no picture on the screen that we can remember has California ot the golden, rough days of '49 been set forth with such fascination and glamour or so faithfully as in David Wark Griffith's new Paramount-Art-craft production, "Scarlet Days," which is being shown at the Washington Theatre this week. The old-time California has frequently been represented as a place where the chief Industry was murder and whose population was about equally divided between cow punchers in hair pants and dance hall young ladles dressed like the Ziegfeld Follies. Mr. Griffith shows the old frontier as it really was in its roaring brutality and its strange tender chivalry. Richard Barthelmess and a fine cast help to make this picture more than worth while. MURRETTE. A stranger might have thought on entering the studio where "Luck in

Pawn," Marguerite Clark's ParamountArtraft picture showing at the Murrutte Theatre this week, was produced that he had made a mistake and wandered Into a grand opera rehearsal

that is, if he made his visit while Tom Persse, who has one of the chief character roles in the picture, was in the midst of one of his singing moods. Mr. Persse is an old-time opera performer, having appeared in some of the most famous productions of the past decade. He is now engaged exclusively in motion picture work, but he frequently yields to requests of other members of the casts with which he appears to entertain them in Idle moments between scenes with operatic selections. His Impromptu audiences declare that it is as good as a night at the Metropolitan Opera House. V MURRAY. Again, at the Murray Theatre yesterday, this city accorded a hearty welcome to Gladys Brockwell, the William Fox star. The photoplay was "Thieves" a crook play which deserved the applause It received. Never has there been shown here a better picture of the sort, with a stronger cast or a more capable star. Gladys Brockwell's popularity has grown j-.pidly In this city, and her work is justified by the artistic character of her work. Her fight with the gentleman crook at the end of

"Thieves" adds the biggest thrill to many that are projected upon a most acceptable love story. MURRAY There are three clevpr asia nffor.
