council. The school was condemned
for nine different reasons by the in
; dustrlal board, which made a definite
recommendation that an architect be i employed to make plans for the re
modeling. The nine points of con
demnation contained 4n the report
follow: 1. The building, erected to accom
modate 300 pupils, and which should
not have more than 350, now has over
600.
2. The building is not equipped
for such a large number.
3. Corridor on the fourth floor la
not ot sufficient width.
4. The winding stairway In the tower should not be used by the
pupils.
6. Desks in some of the rooms are
not spaced according to law. 6. Plumbing in bad condition.
7. Plastering in most of the rooms
in bad condition. Danger of Fire Shown.
8. The rooms on the third floor
should not be used as class rooms
The domestic science room on the third floor should be closed at once as there is grave danger from the gas stove In the kitchen because of pos
sible explosion or fire. 9. In order to relieve the conges
tion and to make the building safe for
the pupils, I recommend that you calJ
in a competent architect to remodel
the building.
"-t Statistics showing the growth In the
population of the schools during the
last 10 years were submitted In a re
port, which also pointed to the fact that the newest school building was
the Joseph Moore school, built seven
years ago.
The plans In short were for the
erection of the new junior high schools
on the east and west side and for repairs and remodeling to every school
building In tne city.
Byram Robbins, city attorney, told
tne councilmen that approving of con
tracts for erection and remodeling or repairing of new buildings was the
only action they would have to take, as they had nothing to do with the
indorsement of a bond. Bentley Makes Request.
J. H. Bentley said that It was the request of the school board that council approve the plans, so when board members appeared before the state tax commissioners they could say that the city council bad Indorsed the action of the board. After argument, council agreed to appoint a committee of three to consult with the Knights of Pythias lodge, on condition of their building on South Eighth street, and to get experts to pass on the safety of the structure. The mayor appointed Councilmen Sweitzer, Williams and Golden. Salaries Are Increased. Councilman Williams urged that Richmond adopt an ordinance to turn the clocks ahead an hour March 1.
against the ordinance, basing his ar arument on the fact that the super intendent should be satisfied with $2,000 a year as he had no previous experience in this line prior to his taking the office.

Where Vicks Began The Dm; Store in which O. Henry Spent Hit Boyhood This is the drug- (tore in Greensboro N.C, purchased by Mr. Lunaford Richardson in 1888 from Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter was the ancle of "Will" Porter, who, under lb nom-de-plume of O. Henry, became America's greatest short story writer. O. Henry practically grew up in this store and learned here the profession of pharmacy. It was during his years behind the prescription counter of this drug; store that Mr. Richardson worked out the formula for Vicks.
Directions for the Use of Vicks
VICK'S VapoRub comes in salve form. When applied 'to the body its action is two-fold. 1st. INTERNAL. The heat of the body releases the ingredients in the form of vapors. These vapors are inhaled with each breath, carrying the medication through the air passages to the lungs. 2nd. EXTERNAL. In addition, Vicks is absorbed thru and stimulates the skin, attracting the blood to the surface and aiding the vapors inhaled to relieve the congestion. For Deep Chest Colds, Sore Throat, Bronchitis, Coughs, Hoarseness For severe cases, hot, wet towels should be applied over the throat and chest to open the pores of the skin. Then Vicks should be rubbed well in, spread on thickly and covered with two thicknesses of hot, flannel cloths. The clothing should be left loose around the neck and the bed clothes arranged in the form of a funnel, so that the vapors arising may be freely inhaled. For Head Colds, Asthma, Catarrh, Hay Fever, Whooping Cough' For these troubles, Vicks can be used as for chest colds or can be melted in a
spoon and the vapors inhaled, or a little applied up the nostrils and snuffed back into the air passages. For Spasmodic Croup and Children's Colds Vicks is particularly recommended for children's colds, since it is externally applied and can, therefore, be used often and freely with perfect safety. For spasmodic croup, rub Vicks over the throat and chest until the difficult breathing is relieved; then spread on thickly and cover with a hot flannel doth. An application at bedtime usually prevents a night attack of croup. For Use as a Liniment, Poultice or Plaster On account of its penetrative and rubefacient effect on the skin, Vicks has been found excellent for many minor ailments, such as Bites, Boils, Burns, Bruises, Cuts, Frost bite, Itchings, Muscular Soreness, Poison oak, Sunburn, Headache. Vicks Is Not Meant to Replace the Physician At the first symptoms of a serious illness, such as pneumonia, a phy-
How the Use of this External Treatment for Cold Troubles Has Grown MORE than a score of years ago, Lunsford Richardson, a druggist in a little North Carolina town, was trying to find a new way to treat spasmodic croup and colds. He had been trying to find it for years he needed such a treatment in his own home he knew that epicac and internal medicines disturbed the delicate digestions of children that the only way to get medication directly to the air passages and lungs was in vapor form. So he was searching for an effective vapor treatment which would be economical, convenient, and which could be used without the necessity of closing up the sick room and thus excluding the fresh air, so important in the treatment of colds. At last, this druggist found a process by which he could combine in salve form the standard, time-tested remedies Camphor, Menthol, Eucalyptus, Thymol and Turpentine with other volatile oils so that when this salve was spread over the throat and chest the ingredients would be vaporized by the body heat. These vapors, inhaled with each breath all night long, carried thejnedication directly to the parts affected and at the same time the
salve was adsorbed thru and stimulated the skin, aiding the vapors inhaled to relieve the congestion. This product was named Vick's VapoRub. Now over 17 Million Jars are used yearly Vicks was found to be good for a great many troubles besides spasmodic croup, and as time went on, its sale increased county by county and state by state, until now over 17 million jars are used each year almost one jar for every family in the United States. And this in spite of the fact that Vicks is still a new form of treatment to many people in the North and far West. The best testimony to the value of Vicks is the increasing number of families who, each year, are converted to the use of this real "Little Bodyguard in the Home.'! . Here is the record of the number of jars used annually for the last : ew years-.

sician should always be called. Many other troubles, such as chronic catarrh or continued headache,
call for the diagnosis of a good doctor. Vicks is simply an emergency remedy, which can be kept
in the home ready for instant use and which can be used freely, with perfect safety, on the youngest member of the family. Samples Free If you have never tried Vicks, we will be glad to send samples free to you and any
