against social diseases was outlined
by the Rev. George W. Burbanck, pas-
I tor of St. Paul's Episcopal church, be
fore the ministerial association Monday. His address In part follows:
The church must not lag behind
medicine and sureery. Once upon a
time these were known as the heal
ing arts, now they find greater glory In being known as the preventing arts. The end and aim of scientific endea
vor is to breed a better race of men. Is there nothing that the church can do with medicine and surgery? Will the church pass by while science lingers and serves? The church, or or
ganized religion, has the opportunity
of a life-time to say: "Go, and sin no more". Sin will be reduced when the conditions which favor it have been reduced by prevention and elimination.
"The red-light district in any city hurts that city as much as a cancer hurts a human body. Cancers may be concealed but not cured by smearing powders and rouge . over . them, and red-light districts can be winked at but such methods invite the spread of the disease that gnaws at humanity's vitals. A red-light always means danger, and science says It need not shine.
Science has demonstrated that contlnency Is possible. , Religion has always preached this fact but science has demonstrated it. This corroboration should give us new courage and new zeal. Let religion and medicine stand back to back and fight their way through the mass of encircling opposition and indifference behlnd'whlch the social evil has taken refuge. Church Must Be Neighbor. "You know how the church Is composed as well as I do. The church and the pastor are not one and the same, and If the church is to be a neighbor the spirit of nelghborliness must pervade its entire membership. If there are those among us who cannot do good let them refrain from doing evil. This will simplify the problem before us. "The parent these days 13 a busy, worried person and delegates much that used to be his sole responsibility to the doctor, the teacher, and the pastor. About all the modern parent does is to give the child to the world, and feed, clothe, and shelter him. This Is a good deal, but robins, sparrows.
and Jays do as much for their young. "The birds do more than that, they will attack the foes that threaten their nests, and will give up their lives In idefnese of their young. The average rarent Is the last to heed the cries of warning. He is foolishly optimistic and Is quite willing to defend his
theory that his offspring is 100 per
fect. His own boyhood ought to teach
him more than this.
Fornication and adultery are includ
ed in the decalogue, together with murder and stealing, but the Almighty has fixed His canon, His Immutable law, against any infraction of the code. The church, that is to say, the
by and say: "Such things will always
be because they always have been. "That may be the chorus of the ungodly, but the godly must not join in it. To think or to say such things is to take Issue with the will and purposes of God concerning man's re
demption. The State has said : 'This sin must stop!' Shall the Church say, throughoue her membership: 'It cannot be stopped'? I rest my case, it is in your hands, neighbors.
