COUNTY AGENT NEED, BROWN TELLS FARM BODY OF CONGRESS
WASHINGTON. Jan. 30. Representatives of agriculture from several states, who included G. I. Christie, of Purdue university, and John G. Brown, president of the Indiana Federation of Farmers' Associations, appeared before the agricultue ; committee of the house Thursday afternoon as friends of the county agriculture agent. . They approved the efforts of congress to reduce government expenses where possible, but they urged that it was not In the Interest of economy to trim the appropriation for county agents. They urged that the county
i.0vnt has such a close relationship
to food production ' that it is greatly
to the country's benefit that his pay
be Increased instead of reduced. G. L Christie, former assistant secretary of the United States depart
ment of agriculture, who acted as spokesman for the delegation, told the , committee that " a reduction in the Federal appropriation a year ago had
; decreased the . number of county i agents In the country by 400, and that
F In Indiana alone there have been 13
I resignations since the , first of the
j present month. Tendency Toward Reduction.
Mr. Christie said there Is a tendency among farmers to, reduce production, this growing out of a fear of prices coming from the campaign against the high cost of living, and that It would be a bad stroke for the country to lose Its county agents at a time when every agency Is needed to stimulate the production of food products. "So many brood bows have been sold that there will be 1,000,000 less pigs in Indiana alone," said Mr. Christie. He also said that in Indiana the wheat acreage had been reduced onethird and that the yield promised to be below normal, and that the shortage of labor may result in a reduction next year of the corn apreage. The county agent, he said. Is needed to help keep up production.
