WOMEN MUST PAY H INCOME TAX; RULES FOR THEM GIVEN

during 1919? This question Is a leading one In view of the fact that, owing to the high wages and salaries received by women last year, the feminine

contingent will represent a considerable part of the roster of taxpayers this period. It may be said at the outset that women are subject to all of the provisions of the federal income ; tax. . -: A single woman, irrespective of age, whose taxable net income equaled or exceededd , $1,000 during 1919 is required to file an Income tax return. , This applies to girls under . age, . whether living with their parents or not. A widow, or a married woman who is living apart from her husband, is counted a single person. Some Exceptions Recognized In this connection it should be un- . derstood that a wife whose husband is in a sanitarium or temporarily working in another city, and is separated from him only through necessity, is not considered as "living apart" from her husband. Although a husband and wife usually file one joint return, including the income of both, separate returns are . required if either had a net income exceeding $5,000. A married woman who has an income from a separate source is privileged to file a separate return with respect to that income, if she so desires. A wife is also required to file her own return if her husband does not include her Income in his schedule. A married woman who lives with her husband is not - allowed a prescribed exemption. She and her husband have $2,000, plus $200 additional for each dependent, and this exemptoin may be taken by either or divided between them. $1,000 Exempt from Taxation. Although an unmarried woman, a widow, or a married woman who is living apart from her husband, must file an Income tax return if her net income for 1919 was $1,000 or over, she is entitled to an exemption on - the

first $1,000 of her income and if she is the head of a family, as defined in

the Income tax regulations, she may

claim $1,000 additional exemption. Also, she may claim further exemption of $200 for each persorv for whom she is the chief support, if the dependent is under 18 years of age, or is mentally or physically incapable of self-support. A public school teacher or other city, town, county or state employe, la not taxed on her salary or wages, but must file a return if her taxable Income from other sources was sufficient in amount to come within the law's definitions.

Granville Barker, to Lecture Here, is Expert Granville Barker,, playwright and producer, who will appear here on Jan. 28, under the auspices of the Women's Departmental club, is one of the few English -visitors- that has correctly puaged the' real national life of America, according to critics who have heard his lectures. He is a pioneer in his methods of management and producing, and is one of the few men able to present the right-minded tradition toward tradition Wirad human understanding of audiences. He presents three lectures, all of which are full of true understanding of the stage and its management.

Former Students Urged to Attend Dinner Wayne county alumni and former students of Indiana university will celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the institution with a dinner next Monday evening at the Westcott hotel. Prof. A. M. Brooks, head of the Fine Arts department at the universityk will be the principal speaker of the evening. All alumni and former students are invited and urged to attend this dinner and should notify Miss Flora Broaddus, telephone 2684, or Miss Hazel Sarles at the Palladium as fcoon as possible. Short responses will be given by a number of the alumni, and a short business ression with the election of officers will close the meeting-.

Odd Fellows Charter Special Train to Lynn A special train has been chartered by Whitewater lodge of Odd Fellows to transport 200 or more of its members to Iynn next Saturday night when Lynn lodge of Odd Fellows will entertain thefr brethren from this city and county. The Whitewater degree team ivill confer the third degree on a large class of candidates in Lynn lodge-. All Odd Fellows in Richmond and vicinity are invited to make the trip. The arrangements provide for the special train leaving the Pennsylvania station at 6:15 o'clock Saturday evening and returning leave Lynn about midnight. Tickets for the trip will bp on sale at the meeting of Whitewater lodge Friday night and also at the .Pennsylvania station Saturday evening.
