(Copyright, 191V, tty The Wheeler Syndicate. Inc.) , "What Is the greatest secret In the world?" inquired the Widow impulsively. ' The Bachelor glanced up to where she sat curled up amongst the multicolored pillows in a corner of the window-seat. - "What Is this a rebus?" he demanded, suspiciously, "or are we playcharades? The greatest secret in the world? Why- a woman's real opin
ion of her husband, of course.
The Widow shook her head until the
afternoon sunlight on one side, and
the firelight on the other vied for pos
session of her glinting hair. "Don't be facetious?" she begged.
"This Is serious. I will give you two
more guesses. "Oh. well. If I must be serious,'
complained the Bachelor, "the most
absorbing secret in the world is the
secret of happiness; the most fasci
natlng secret is the secret of success.
And then, there's the secret of eternal youth, and the secret of the
Sphinx, and "
"All wrong!" interrupted the Widow
with a wave of her hand "Lots of
people have discovered the secret to the first two and there is no reason to the last two The optimists and
the 'Don't Worry clubs and the Mental Scientists all know the secret of happiness I know it myself! And
once you know a secret, it isn t fasci
nating any more And as for the secret of success, it's still easier to
solve A measure of bard work, a
world of faith in yourself, and a dash of luck. But the greatest secret is
something that everybody longs to know and nobody has e"ver yet succeeding in guessing! Either you got
it"
"I haven't," protested the Bachelor,
frivolously, "I haven't had it this af
ternoon! What is it?"
"It's magnetism!" announced the
Widow, impressively, "and either you have it or you haven't it and nobody in the world knows what it is, nor where It comes from, nor what It is
composed of." " "I do!" declared the Bachelor un
blushingly. "It is composed of about a hundred and twenty pounds of pink and white frivolity and two pounds
of glittering hair, and
"It isn't a matter of beauty," proceeded the Widow, ignoring the per
sonal application. "I have seen many a Venus sitting out half her dances,
while some little snub-nosed, freckle-
faced thing had to split the 'extras' three times to satisfy al lthe men
around her. And it isn't, as the theo
rists think, a matter of vitality and
radiance, because a perfectly healthy
hoyden can ruffle a mans feelings

It Is secret power, a reserve force that you can not see or define, but can simplv feel. It is mental electricity. "Still, suggested the Bachelor, "il the average girl would be a little less frank In her ways, and her conversation, and her gowns, she might appeal more to our imagination and our curiosity, mightn't she? "Of course. sighed the Widow. "11 is always the quiet little thing, swathed in draperies, who sits in a corner and uses her eyes, that draws al! the men to her. "Then giving magnetism tc an eligible bachelor must be "Carrying soap to the Czar of Russia!" groaned-the Bachelor, bitterly. He doesn't know what to do with it." "It must make life complicated for you!" commiserated the Widow. "But you haven't told me what it is," said the Bachelor, hastily changing the topic. "I can't," admitted the Widow, "and yet," she added, gazing dreamily out of the window, "it's what makes you think of gardens and moonlight and fairy stories and Prince Charming, when you listen to a man's voice " "And what makes you hear music, and smell violets, and dream of Venice and young love, when you look into a woman's eyes," added the Bachelor, gazing dreamily into the fire.
