Heart and Beauty Problems By Kn. Elisabeth Thompson , ,

Bear Mrs, Thompson: We are chums fourteen years old. Is It proer to Invite our gentlemen friends ito our homes after bavins been to party? We would also like to know If It Is proper for two or more airls to go to

a movie with our boy friends unchaperoned. " BLONDE AND BRUNETTE. If you have been to a party at night you should not invite the boys Into the house upon returning home. You are too young to attend movies unchaperoned. v , S. D. D.; Your idea to attendd the school seems to me excellent. . In that way you can learn a trade and later work into your own - business. At the library you can get helpful suggestions for reading and the study of English. After talking to you. the

librarian will know better than I do

., what books to advise.

Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am twenty-four years of age and am going

witn a fellow thirty-five years old.

I am engaged and he seems Jealous

when I speak to other fellows. I am working in a store and of course . have to treat one the same as the other. He sneaks around to see what I am doing.

Of course I love him and don't think t could give him up, only at times I feel like going out. as he isn't interested In dancing eta. His folks seem to be angry at me fofr some reason. I don't like to have

them angry, what can I do to win them. He wants me to marry, but I don't like to until he leaves home. He has been renting their farm. What should I do, wait until he leaves the farm or put up with his folks for a year? I am easy to get along with and would put up with almost 'anything, as I love him. UNDECIDED. . In spite of your love for the man, I doubt the wisdom of your marrying him. His Jealousy and habit of spying upon you would always be disagreeable and cause trouble. Then too, If you are eager to dance and enJoy yourself in ways he does not care

for, you would be unhappy settling

down to his way of living.

Do not marry until you can have

your own home. Since his people do not seem to like you, they might make It very unpleasant for you if you were

to live in the same home, unless a

married couple can start out alone they do not have a fair chance to be

happy.

, "Finer Instincts' oh, rubbish!" snapped Athena. Ifs all a matter of opportunity and habit. How many of us would have the finer Instincts if we hadnt been trained to 'em? And they don't take. long to acquire at that. Give Katie sis months of clothes and opek and she'd be at good a society woman as I ami She wears small hats with little trim-

mlng. as it Is, and no cheap Jewelry. She's more modest-looking on the street than I am. when she goes out Sundays and Thursdays. Believe me, my dear: most refinement is merely

imitation the instinct for seeing

what's what, and doing likewise!" "Well " I murmured dubiously, "neonla will never take her up. They

will always fling her humble origin In

her face. It will make her miserable.'

"I don't believe it. Who cares for 'people.' anyhow? Gerald wants to

live in the country. Who'd know any

thing about her there,? I wish Gerald WOULD settle down and amount to something. I think Katie would help him to." . "Then If - you're satisfied and Gerald's satisfied, what' more is necessary?" I aBked. "To have her satisfied." said Athena crisply, T told you she'd refused him." "But of course, she doesn't mean It

Have you spoken to her?" Athena nodded vigorously. "That's the very point,. dear. She say she won't marry a man who doeBn't work hard who hasnt a real ambition.

Wouldn't that JAR you? Now, do you

see why I'd rather like Katie for a

daughter-in-law?" (To be continued.)

"My dear!" cried Athena, running in this afternoon, her usually careful apparel thrown on anyhow, her thin face flushed and sparkling. "What DO you think's happened! My son, Gerald, has fallen in love with the housemaid!" "Oh. you poor old darling!" I responded sympathetically. "How very awful." Athena drew back. "Poor old darling, nothing!" she sputtered. "I don't 8oo that it's so awfuL Katie's a real nice girl. I like her better than some of the society puppets on my visiting list", "Is he Is he actually talking of marrying her?" I gasped. "He's proposed to her, and she has refused him." answered my friend. "That's what I'm bo excited about." "Athena, dear, I believe you have

gone stark staring crazy. It can't be anything but . the most vulgar sort of physical attraction. It would wear

off in no time and then where would you all be? You'd be ashamed of her, Gerald would tire of her and the girl herself would never be anything but miserable. What are you thinking of?" Funny old Athena made herself comfortable in Jim's morris chair, crossed her knees and lit a clgaret thoughtfully. "I'm thinking," said Athena slowly, "that all marriages are based on physical attraction, except the few

that are frankly made for revenue only. The greater part of all love Is based on sex. As soon as that goes, the whole structure crumbles. Isn't personal attraction what we are all striving to get and to keep? If you have that as a starter, you can acquire the other necessities of you are halfway smart." "It would take character, I said. "Character Is the most important thing of all." "Katie's got character, put in Athena emphatically. "Well, she might even have character and still set every one's teeth on edge with her vulgarities. It takes heredity and environment to give a person the finer instincts," I argued.
