SMASH RED FLAG, PSAYS WOOD, STEADY' TO BE WATCHWORD
PASSAIC. N. J.. Jan. 13. Smash the Ved flag; bar the nation's gates to undesirable Immigrants and Americanize the desirable ones; teach AmericanIsm In our schools and see that the teachers are properly paid and cared for; tolerate but one flag and one
language. These doctrines were urg
ed last night by MaJ. , Gen. Leonard Wood In addressing a meeting held under the combined auspices of the Y. M. C. A., the Y. W. C. A and the
Passaic Boys Club to raise funds for
a new club building In Passaic. - "There Is a good deal of uneasiness now In the country." said Gen. Wood. "This Is no time for new experiments.
This Is no time for new theories. This la no time for loose thinking. The
watchword of this country today should
be 'steady' and the slogan should be law and order, the rights of property,
the courts, the constituted authorities,
all of those things."
In regard to the schools, Gen. Wood
declared that the country had ''rather
gone to Bleep on the question of
" schools and colleges." After remark'
; Ing that the average college professor Is paid less than the aevrage skilled
, laborer, and the average country
teacher on the same par with a first-
class chauffeur, he declared that the best of the teachers were leaving the ' schools and that they must be brought
back at whatever cost.
' Turing to the question of language.
the general advocated one language
throughout the grade schools. "We
want to build up a certain national
solidarity, and there is no stronger in
fluence than a common language," he said. "Then again, we want to emphasize to every one that while there are equal rights and opportunities in (this country, there are also equal obligations."

Committee Will Consider . Guard Company for City
Following a meeting in the Commercial Club Monday night, at which Ad- : Jutant General Harry B. Smith, of the Indiana National Guard, told of the I need of forming a company in Richmond, a committee was appointed, ; representatives of various industrial ! and business activities to investigate rnd present plans for establishing a T company. Adjutant General Smith told of the purpose of the guard, and urged that a company be fornfed here. Emphasis was placed on the necessity of having
an organized company in every com
munity, to combat . with a national crisis should one arise.
- The meeting was called at the request of Captain Myron Malsby, of Company K, and he was appointed to investigate. Other members of the committee are: Will W. Reller, of the Rotary club; W. H. Romey, of the

Are You a Partner?
Says Mrs. Harry to Mrs. Jimmy: "I don't see how the stores can afford to send home my gloves. I should think they'd lose money on the sale." They sometimes do. dear Madam, and on lota and lots of other things you buy or have sent home and then don't bay. The modern store Is, indeed, business co-operation in its highest form. It is only because Mrs. Jimmy buys a dress pattern that Mrs. .Harry's gloves can be sent home; because Mrs. Harry buys a. -rug that Mrs. Jimmy is spared the nuisance of walking home with a mop over her shoulder. Thus it happens that every regular
customer of a store is a partner in the enterprise and in a very real and personal sense, too. We may not share in the actual cash dividends enjoyed by the stockholders of these enterprises, because we get our dividends as we go long. All we need to do to reassure ourselves' on this point is to consider the prices charged by the store; to figure how much less the purchasing-power of a dollar
would be in Richmond were there no large stores serving crowds of people, were thereno volume-co-operation working to lower prices. With just which one of Richmond's good, stores are you now sharing profits? Remember, you need only invest time to begin to earn your dividends Just time enough to become a regular reader of the day-by-day announcements ot the stores as you
