CITY SALARIES ARE
& SUBJECT OF DEBATE; TDirnn nm ro nn
iiwnu nuLLo ur
Three amendments were adopted
nd one refused, to the right and ordinance on the traffic rules, by council at the first meeting of the new year Monday night, and an ordinance provisionally raising the salaries of city officers was discussed. Two of the amendments wero new rules, to be enforced, while th? third fixed the fine to be assnesed for violation of any section of the ordinance. The violator will be fined not less than $1 or more than $50, according to the amended rtatute. Protection of pedestrians was made In the amendment providing that no vehicles be allowed to stand at any street intersection or wilhin 15 feet of the property line at the corner or within 10 feet of a water hydrant.
No repairing of vehicles shall bo-
allowed on streets, alleys, or sidewalks, except fn emergency cases, euch as the changing of tires. The other adopted amendment wiU require a vehicle to stop in the rear of a street car when the car is not ir. motion, and wait until the car has started again. This is to insure the safety to perrons getting on or off the car, proper protection. However, this does not apply to drivers proceeding in the opposite direction. The amendment proposed by several cf the councilmen providiug that when two vehicles approach a corner, coming from opposite directions and meeting, the vehicle gcing east or west be given tho right cf way, was voted down, seven to fivo. r Boosts in Pay Legal? The question of whether the salaries of 11 city officials could bo
raised or not was also brought up.
There is some question as to whether this can be done while an official is Jn JHce, as the law is not clear on
this point. In recognition of this fact that ordinance containing the appropriation of salaries for 1920, carried a by-section saying that if this action was found to be illegal it could be rescinded, and the money refunded later. In this event the salaries would revert to their present basis. After being advised that the salary of the city engineer could not be legally raised, the city attorney was in
structed to provide, If possible, means for legally raising it. The changes granted by the council, follow: City clerk, $1,800 to $2,100; building inspector, $1,200 to $1,350; street commissioner, $1,200 to $1,320; assistant city civil engineer, $1,200 to $1,320; Inspectors of weights and measures, $1,000 to $1,200; custodian of city building, $840 to $900; sanitary inspector, $840 to $1,000; superintendent of crematory, $840 to $1,000; meat inspector, $1,000 to $1,100; superintendent of light plant. $1,800 to $2,000; chief of Are department, $1,500 to $1,620; assistant chief, $1,260 to $1,380, each captain, $1,200 to $1,320; all firemen who have served more than six months, $1,140 to $1,260; those who have served less than six months, $1,140 to $1,200. Minor businesses were reported Several monthly reports were read.
