LUTHERANS PLAN WORLD CONFERENCE DURING JANUARY

At a special called 'meeting of the National Lutheran Council, held at the Hotel Afltor, New York on Dec 18, steps were taken to call a world con ferenee of Lutherans In America, 1920. This action wos based on reports of commissioners of the Lutheran Church of America that have been in Europe for the past , six months surveying conditions. The purpose of the conference Is to discuss possibilities of closer affiliation and mutual helpfulness In the reorganization work that is before the Lutheran Church. The meeting of the council was called for the purpose of discussing the needs of the Lutheran Church In

Europe, on the basis of the reports of the fire commissioners lust returned from Europe, The commissioners of the Lutheran Church of America who were In Europe are: Dr. J. A. Morehead, President of Roanoke College; Chairman, Prof. S. Youngert, Rock Island, 111., Prof. O. T. Rygh, Associate Editor of the American Lutheran Survey, Rev. a. Fandrey, of Chicago, and Rev. L. Schuh, of Ohio. , The commissioners to Europe recommend that five million dollars be raised by the Lutheran Church of America within the next years, to meet the needs of the Lutheran church in Europe. Among the needs are the establishment of theological seminaries in such countries that are left Without seminaries through the reassignment of territory by the peace conference. Churches must be rebuilt, where the war has destroyed them. In Poland It Is estimated that ten million dollars of Lutheran church property has been destroyed. Many pastors must be supported. Especially in the eastern countries church-life has .been utterly deranged. Great groups of Lutherans are entirely without pastors. The pastors .having been killed by the revolution or driven ! out. Charitable agencies must be supported whose Income has been 1 educed beyond a point where is can meet the situation.
