1918 GI6AR LEAF OF WESTERN OHIO RATED DEST 111 17 YEARS BY MANUFACTURERS

' Y By WILLIAM R. SANBORN Ohio tobacco growers have the sat faction of knowing that the manufacturers of cigars are finally admitting that the 1918 cigar leaf Is really of , fine quality. "It Is said to be the best leaf in 17 years, both as to burn and aroma," according to O. J. McKee. of Lewisburg, Ohio, who is recognised as an authority on cigar leaf, and hai acted as publicity man for the tobacco growers In the western Ohio district during the past year. " In view of the quality of the Ohio leaf crons. both in 1918 and 1919.

growers are at a loss to understand , why prices have ruled so low, the present market being from 18 cents to 20 cents for broadleaf, and from 20 cents to 22 cents for simmer Spanish. One would naturally suppose that all the 1918 crop had been marketed long since, but such does not seem to be the fact. Mr.' McKee states that, from his observation, not more than 60 per cent of the 1918 crop has been sold in this section, and that practically all the 1919 crop is still in the hands of the farmers, at least in the upper end of the Miami Valley. The 1918 crop still in the hands of growers is the cream of the offering. Our readers will recall the selling of some 1918 leaf as low as 11 cents to 13 cents, early last spring, and some of this was very fair tobacco, at that. The consensus of opinion was against , any such a sacrifice of costs, to say nothing of profits, and the association held firmly against these -low prices. An Upward Turn. Prices finally took the upward trend. Manufacturers' agents came and looked over the field, many eastern men being in the lot. These advanced their figures a cent or so at atime, until along in November, when some paid up to 21 cfipts for the best selections, and early this month a top of 22 cents was reached. This price brought out considerable tobacco, in spots, in Preble and adjoining counties, where the association was consulted and gave consent to sell, by committee, we understand. At any rate there were consultations right along during many months and a little leaf was let go from time to time. Quinn Bros., tobacco warehousemen at Eaton, believe that but little of the 1918 crop remains in growers' hands near their town. Eldorado and West Manchester men tell a different story, and claim that the bulk of the finest 1918 leaf is still in farmers' hands in that section, and that this condition is likely to continue, unless better prices are offered. The members of the association hold weekly meetings at the West Manchester central school building, when all phases of the tobacco situation are discussed and the growers are braced to hold on.

' The Lancaster County, Pennsylvania men have been getting better "prices, too, of late, and large sales are reported, though the various local associations are still carrying some old crops and have not yet marketed the bulk of the 1919 crop, though considerable of this leaf is now In the hands of warehouse men and manufacturers, for ripening.

Binder leaf has been in great demand, and there will be no surplus of this growth, either in Wisconsin or Connecticut, to the contrary, there

Is an apparent shortage of this desir

able crop and prices are firm -and the tobacco Is in demand In all positions. This is also' true of the Georgia and Florida cigar leaf crops. Prime Havana leaf Is bringing outside figures and now that the cigarmakers' strikes are pretty well settled, and production being speeded up. the outlook is better for all grades of leaf fit for cigar manufacture. At this time there are very few representatives of manufacturers in the Ohio field, and these are finding but slender picking at their bid prices. The feeling that good cigar leaf must eventually command more money quite widely persists, and while this is true the 'tendency to hold . will govern, wherever the grower can do without the money.

THUS, in seven words, is epitomized the ideals of service animating the seven men who direct the activities of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana). Maximum service! is the only foundation upon which Big Business may rest securely. It is this ideal which has impelled the Company to ceaseless effort in multiplying the number of products produced from crude petroleum, each to fulfill a definite, useful service not to the few, but to humanity. Only private initiative and enterprise, willing to hazard time, money, ingenuity, and effort to gain a promising but uncertain Benefit, could have developed the many products manufactured by the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) for the service of the people. In the conduct of its business, the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) always has recognized the four fundamental interests in all industrycapital, labor, management, and the public Because of this, and because it has striven to prepare every product as nearly perfect as ingenuity, integrity and earnest effort can make it, this Company has been able to approximate its ideal of the greatest service to the greatest number.
