A Big Chance for Ex-Service Men A special ruling allows all former service men, no matter when discharged, to reinstate their insurance on or before Dec. 31, 199, on statement in their applications that they are in as good health as at the date of discharge or at the date of the expiration of the grace period for payment of premiums, whichever is the later date, and payment of two months' premiums on the amount of insurance to be reinstated. After December 31, the' privilege of reinstatement will be limited to the period of 18 months

following the month of discharge, ' or 12 months following the month of lapse if reinstatement is made after 18 months following month of discharge. ;V'';;; ' .' Vp.'.:. As only two months' premiums are now re

quired for reinstatement, a former, service man who paid more than two months' back premiums

in reinstating prior to July 25, 1919, can, on ap

plication, obtain credit for any premiums so paid in excess of two and have the overplus applied

toward future premium payments. The bureau of war risk insurance wants the

service men to know what their rights are as to

government insurance and the methods by which this insurance may be retained or reinstated. It is to the interest of every service man whose insurance may have lapsed or been canceled to ap

ply at once for reinstatement. To wait may mean disaster.

Check or money order should be made payable

to the treasurer of the United States and, with the application, sent to the premium receipt sec

THE GEORGE MATTHEW ADAMS DAILY TALK

THE SPIRIT

Throuout the world It goes finer, freer, broader. This is heart opening time, when the feeling of the universe' is one of thoughtfulness for others. The spirit of unselfishness is moving about. Our lives would be very dark indeed were they to themselves. Only as we find happiness in service do we feel our best selves rising to better things. The religion of the One who was born in Bethlehem had no frills to it It was too big to be confined within the narrow walls of secet or creed. Love was its heart, its control its whole excuse for being. And so Is that every human being may enter the Christmas time with the same song of hope in its heart. For to have the Spirit is to be kind, uncritical, generous, and fine in thought. Which always makes people want to kive not money, but love, helpfulness, service, cheer. When you get the real Spirit, you want to go out of your way to do things that will make other folks happy. Let us turn our hearts Inside out this .Christmas time and give, give, give of the best of what we are, to make this world just a little better on our part. Then it shall be that the old year shall walk away splendidly each of us having its great glad-speed for the new year soon to be!

Good Evening BY ROY K. MOULTON

What's in a Name?

Pacts about your name; Its history; Us meaning; whence It was derived; Its significance; your lucky day and lucky Jewel. BY MILDRED MAR8HALL

(Copyright, 1919, by The Wheeler Syndicate. Inc.) KATHERINE. Like Mary, the charming name of Katherine has an almost illimitable history, and its derivations and con

tractions are endless. It signifies pure, since It was first borne by a maiden martyr, whose name was chosen as the center of an allegory or intellectual religion. Katherine in Greek became Catharina in the Latin tongue. Going further back, it can be found that the martyred Katherine was socalled for another and earlier Katherine, a virgin martyr of Alexandria, whose history Is unknown. Some historians credit her with being the daughter of a king of Egypt, but this contention can not be substantiated. However it is. Katherine's purity and sancity are unmistakable. The martyrdom of the original Katherine is recorded in literature, and art the destruction of the wheels that were to have torn her asunder; her martyrdom by the sword, and the translation of her body by angels to MountSinal at whose foot stands a convent bearing her name, where she is adored perpetually, are all familiar themes to the masters of pen and. brush. Passing from the sublime to the practical, the fireworks called Catherine wheels are an allusion to the instruments of torture which were destroyed by lightning and the tiny brown bird known as the Kittywren is so called from association as her sacred bird. The Crusaders brought home the

story of Katherine's martyrdom and

her name spread in fame throughout the west. The Italians had a Santa Caterina, of Sienna,- whose influence was potent during the Middle Ages, thus adding another link to the chain

of sanctity which surrounds the name

of Katherine.

Another famous Katherine was the Countess of Salisbury, heroine of the Garter. John of Gaunt had a dughter,

who is Queen of Castille, made Cate

rina a favorite in Spain, whence It was

returned to England with Katherine

of Aragon. Catherine de Valois, queen of Henry V, brought it to France. Several of the queens of the much

married Henry VIII, bore the name of

Catherine. The "K" in Katherine is the Teu

tonic rendition and the shrewish Katherine of Germany, aa well as the

fr-famed Russian empress are exam'

pies of the bad repute of that spelling, but the faithful Spanish Catalina, as English queen, wrote herself Katherine and so redeemed the name, while

the "shrew was really Caterina and the Russian empress was sometimes

called Ekaterina.

Kathleen, Kitty, Kate and other derivatives of Katherine will be dis

cussed tomorrow.

tne nowers. Father had to remonstrate with him for oversprinkling his

nowers. "You'll make them wilt if

you sprinkle them at any time except

in the morning," he told him.

A few days later mother was trying

to persuade him to wash his face for lunch. Then grandmother tried to use her influence. "Why, I always wash my face before lunch," she told him.

Then Teddy looked at grandma's wrinkles and remembered the flowers. "Yes. and just see how wilted it is," he retorted. Mr. Alberton, the architect, had been invited down to the Billertons to display the plans of Billerton's new house to some guests. "Now," explained Mr. Alberton. "here is the front elevation," and he pointed it out on the 'plans he laid on the library table for the inspection of the visitprs. "With the outside window and the circular gallery here; and this is the east elevation showing the tower." Various comments were made bv the guests, and then little Clarence, aged eight, who was greatly Interest

ed in the new house, chipped in with: "And where are the two mortgages father said he was going to put on?" "Mama, I want a dark breakfast." "Dark breakfast? What do you mean, child?" "Why, last night you told Mary to give me a light supper, and I didn't like it." "Do you think Miss Oldgirl will ever change her mind and marry?" "No. If she marries it will be because some man of her acquaintance changes his mind."

The Christmas message is one of courage. "Fear not." Why should we

The spirit of Christmas is that of worship, exemption, generosity; nothing narrow or selfish. (Matt. 2:1L) Suggestive Thoughts. Christmas speaks of the incarnation, God among men, interested in men; a shepherd seeking lost .men, dying for men. The message suggests that God's truth is not proved by arguments, but revealed in life. "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father." We can understand God only as we live his life. The lesson is one of good will, selfishness makes for injustice. The world will be lost until it builds on
